Back in my mainframe days the Vax editor (EDT) had a very handy change case feature. Select the text and hit Gold 1 on the numpad. EDT is the best full screen editor I ever used in my career.
tHERES NOTHING WORSE THAN TYPING A LINE AND LOOK UP, THEN REALIZE THE dAMN CAPS LOCK IS ON. iT SUCKS.
You got to back space and type all that crap again. 1988 I had the case change feature. Why don’t I have it in 2012?
Is there a Firefox add in to select text and change case? How about Ms Word? Any proggies to change case?
In my version of Microsoft Word, go to Format > Change Case > tOGGLE cASE. Who knows where that is in newer versions of Word, but I can’t imagine they got rid of this function.
That’s right Word does have it. The change case is buried several menus deep. Its almost quicker to retype a couple words rather than dig into the menus. But at least the feature is there. Its useful when entire paragraphs got typed with caps lock on.
So, Firefox is the biggest issue. I shudder to think how many of my posts for SDMB required retyping because of caps lock.
In Word in Office 2010, go to the home tab and find the font group. On the top line just after the super and subscript buttons, there’s one labeled Aa with e little down arrow. If you click on it one of the choices is toggle case.
In Word, you can also use shift+F3 to toggle through cases. Many handy keyboard shortcuts here(you can also customize the keyboard via the customize menu to do practically whatever you want).
This article mentions a couple firefox add ons. But they only work up to 3.5. I just hate the new Firefox. We lost so darn many add ons. Volunteers don’t always have time to update software they wrote two years ago.
Casey Case Converter and decaps both sound good. I hope they get updated soon. Leet key looks way too complicated.
Good response. As a technical writer, I learned that one long ago, shortly after shifting from Word Perfect to Word. Mostly by accident, as Shift+F3 in WP was “Reveal Codes”. But that starts another rant about MS Word.
Thanks. I’m incredibly lazy. As a writer/editor, that means relying on a 12-button mouse, a good grasp of keyboard short-cuts, and a range of custom macros to allow me to minimize movement. I can sit there barely twitching for twenty minutes and get a 250-page book ready to go into layout.
Personally, I avoid this problem by disabling my Caps Lock key (Control panel --> Keyboard --> Key Settings). I have not had a real use for it since the days when I used to do BASIC programming on my BBC Micro. Unfortunately, Windows 7 does give you the option to redefine it to anything useful, but that is no big deal.
That seems like unnecessary overkill when it is easy to disable.
Incidentally, I meant to type that Windows 7 does NOT give you the option to redefine it to anything useful. (I would have liked to redefine it as a second shift key, as my left shift is tiny, but no deal.)
It’s All Text! is a Firefox plugin that allows you to edit text area fields in an external editor of your choice. You could use this plugin, along with your favourite case-changing editor, like (X)Emacs.
Is he the guy who posted this (in puzzle form) on Usenet a decade ago or so?
I’ve thought of doing this. I don’t think I’ve pushed CapsLock deliberately even once during this century, but (yes, I’m fat-fingered) hit it by accident twice a day or so. :smack:
(I won’t pry it off though – I think my son needs CapsLock to help him shoot dragons with his bazooka. :dubious: )
