I already went to the Bar Association, but does anyone know of a site that has a rating/comment system for lawyers?
For instance, I’d like to go to my state and read comments from people who’ve hired certain attorneys that say “this guy is the greatest” or “don’t go with this lawyer, he still needs more experience.”
Don’t know your location. In Ohio, the Supreme Court keeps public records on attorney discipline cases, so you could at least weed out the screwups. I know of no national “Angie’s List” or rating system for lawyers, and ethical rules generally prohibit lawyers here from using client testimonials in advertising. You might ask friends, coworkers or family members who’ve had a lawyer on a similar case (since a lawyer who’s good at drafting a will might not be the best person to defend you in a felony trial) if they were pleased with the lawyer who helped them. You could also contact your local bar association to ask someone there to suggest lawyers with the specialty which you need.
Not aware of any service of the kind you describe, but lawguru.com is a free lawyer referral service where you can get a little insight into the lawyers by looking at their (brief) answers to questions posed by other users. IMHO, more useful than self-selected ratings and/or comments anyway.
For peer review rankings, there’s Martindale-Hubbell.
You should be looking for something called an “Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee.” Each state should (but I can’t speak for all states, only the states I am registered) have one, or the state Supreme Court may be the one taking the roll call.
Oh, and they won’t rank (at least I don’t know of any that actually do rankings), but they will tell you if the attorney has been brought forth for disciplinary proceedings.
