Is there a free e-file for higher income filers?

Most free e-file sites have an income cut-off - around $73,000. Are there any free sites out there for higher incomes - federal or state?

FreeTaxUSA has free Federal filing at all income levels, and is only $14.99 for state filing.

I have been using them since 2003 and have never had an issue. This year I had a question about my return. I sent an email on a Saturday morning, and received an answer 30 minutes later.

A second for them. I’ve used them the last few years with no problems. My state (Colorado) has their own free filing, so I didn’t use FreeTaxUSA’s state forms.

Third for FreeTaxUSA. I’ve used them for the last 5+ years.

If you have an HSA, it’s hard to find a free one.

For what, form 8889? FreeTaxUSA also does those, easy. That form is so trivial to fill out if you take it out of your paycheck and/or only pay for medical (or lie).

Yes, 8889. The other sites I checked made you pay extra for it. I agree it’s a simple form. I guess I’ll use FreeTax next year.

H&R Block free online also supports it, or did in 2020. I found their site easy to use too, they just have the same $73,000 income limit most of the other free options have.

For the past few years, I’ve been using OnLine Taxes (olt.com). At my income level, they’re completely free; but I see they’re advertising “Free federal return for everyone; State return $9.95.”

I’ve been happy with them and have found them easy to use, but then, my taxes have always been fairly simple, and I haven’t compared them to other alternatives.

Not e-file but Glenn Reeves has been providing an Excel spreadsheet you can use to prepare a complete return – he does it as a hobby!
