Is there a name for this thing?

Its baton shaped, approximately 1 foot long. I picture a Roman emperor carrying one. The most famous one was one given to Goering after being promoted. It was made of pearl and covered in diamonds. I believe that its currently on display at the West Point miliitary museum.

It could be a fasces, the Roman sign of imperial power that was co-opted by Mussolini (and gave its name to fascism).

Field Marshal’s baton?

Do you mean a scepter?

Excerpted from Wiki’s entry on baton:

I’m pretty sure it’s an ocarina.

Maybe a sweet potato?

I hope I’m not the only one that read:

“It could be feces.”

Yes. Goering’s looked very similar to that. I thought it might have a cute german name or some special name.

When I first read about where the word facist came from I thought the same thing.

There is a Ukrainian version of this called a Bulawa which was traditionally carried by a leader during ceremony. The tradition persists to this day - here is a picture of Victor Yushchenko holding one. (Jeez, I feel sorry for that guy.)
