Is there a program or service to bypass China's internet firewall?

I’m getting sick of having BBC News, Wikipedia, Google Blogsource, etc. just outright denied. Also, not being able to search for news articles on Falun Gong, Tiananmen Square, etc. (they give you a “The document contains no data” message from Firefox) is getting annoying as well.

I’ve heard of a program that lets you bypass the filter, but I have no idea what it would be. Any ideas?

Do they (the government over there) care about people circumventing their filters? Do they generally ignore these situations or are you actually at risk of getting arrested, etc.?

I haven’t heard of anyone getting in trouble for doing this, but then again, I don’t know too many people that have tried. I think most foreigners would be OK as long as they don’t try to spread info to locals. Of course, I probably would spread info and firewall-bypassing techniques to certain locals, so, uh, watch for me on the news?

Also, thanks QED!

Since this is rather a gray area, I think we’re better off not doing this.

To paraphrase a quote from the writer of that website

Yep. Sounds like that sure will help a few people. But at what cost?
