Is there an RTS that involves the Thirty Years War, the Eighty Years War, the English Civil War, or any of the other wars of the 1600s?
It seems like everything is either medieval-to-early-Renaissance, or post-1700.

Not really an RTS per se (rather, it’s Real Time Grand Strategy), but Europa Universalis goes from the mid-15th to the late 18th century. With both add-ons, the game spans from early 15th to early 19th.
Grand Strategy? Would that be like Civilization or that type of game? What I’m looking for is a combat game like the Medieval series or something similar. Hell, I can’t believe there isn’t some kind of add-on expansion for the Thirty Years War for the Medieval games. I guess most people are extremely ignorant of the wars of the mid-1600s and that includes game designers, even game designers who make war history games.
Cossacks was pretty good for its time, it deals with the 17th and 18th century and plays a bit like Age of Empires II but with thousands of units on the screen and proper line and square formations, flanking manouevers, cannons able to fire grapeshot and so on. It’s not quite historically correct and the formations tended to break down completely in melee, but I can’t think of any other game that’s been as able to capture the feel of pike-and-musket warfare.
Like Civilization ? Hmmm… little bit, I suppose. I’d describe it more as like the strategic campaign of Total War, in real time, minus the battles. And hell of a lot more complex :). So it’s not what you’re looking for.
The only other RTS I can think of (besides Cossacks, as has been stated) would be Rise of Nations, where you get to play a civilization from the Stone Age all the way to nukes, in a way reminiscent of Age of Empires, although it’s a bit more involved than just producing a crapload of units and sending them at the enemy base. That said, the units of the “Gunpowder age” are more Napoleonic than Thirty Years War-ish.
So I guess you’re stuck to waiting for someone to design a 17th century mod for Empire:Total War… or code one yourself. It’s not that hard, really :p, and modellers have already produced unit skins based on historical Thirty Year War uniforms.
