This usually occurs in comedies. Somebody delivers a zinger which is immediately followed by something loud and/or showy. This makes the zinger outright hilarious. Is there a term for this?
Some examples:
Rocky and Bullwinkle - In one episode, they have a beauty contest. Natasha wins because she’s the only girl. Rocky gives her the trophy, and Boris says “Very good Natasha. The last time a judge gave you anything, it was 90 days.” KLONG! Natasha has just bashed him on the head with the trophy.
Dr. Who (Tom Baker) - The Doctor and his friends are escaping the Daleks and run up a staricase. The Daleks shoot their death rays and make lots of noise. Then it all gets quiet for a second, and the Doctor sticks up his head and says “If you’re supposed to be the masters of the universe, why don’t you come up here after us?” BOOM! The Daleks shoot more kaboom rays.
Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Frylock’s invented a shrinking gun. Shake grabs it and shrinks everybody. He then puts Frylock and Carl in an aquarium and makes them fight each other. Carl tells Frylock to blast Shake. Frylock shoots a couple of fireballs out of his eyes, but because they’re so tiny, all they do is put a little hole in Shake’s cup. Shake then says, “Oh how cute. He wants to compare rays.” ZOT! He shrinks Frylock to microscopic size with the gun.
