Is there a truly sugar-free hot chocolate mix around?

I keep finding “no sugar added” hot chocolate, but that’s not the same thing. I want zero grams of total sugar, and it has to taste good. Any suggestions? I’m at a loss.

Use baking cocoa, it has zero sugar. If it’s too bitter by itself, add your favorite non-sugar sweetener or non-sugar creamer.

Add “keto” to your searches and you’ll get plenty of zero sugar mixes. I have no insight as to how they taste.

Look on Amazon for Caffe D’Vita.

I’d say it’s, eh, okay. At best.

The aftertaste always gets me.

Thanks!

Oh, if you make any of it with real milk you have to consider the sugars in the milk, as well.

Any of the mixes made with water are bad×3, imo.

What about my drink of choice, unsweetened almond milk?

Seems like that would be good.
Does it do well heated?
I’ve never done the nut milks.

No sugar (at least the couple of brands I looked at) but 3 grams of fat. My 1% lowfat cow’s milk has less fat.

Carbs are highish per cup.
I’d have to taste it to decide if it’s worth it.

When I was doing keto and got the occasional craving for something sweet, I’d make my own sugar-free chocolate ice cream, which basically consisted of: cocoa powder, unsweetened almond milk, a little vanilla and an artificial sweetener (which used to be Erythritol, but after the possible blood clot findings I switched to allulose).

It was delicious as ice cream. Heated instead of frozen, the same recipe would make a very nice hot chocolate, I would think.

I’d also advise a touch of caution in looking at online descriptions. I’ve seen a few that claim zero sugar, but are using sugar alcohols or other means of adding sweetness which may or may not have effects on your personal blood sugar compared to other non-nutritive sweeteners.

When I was low carbing, I did something similar to @solost’s option, although I used full fat milk, and Saccharine, because that was the low-cal sweetener that worked best for me. Still had plenty of calories though, so it was a rare treat (yes, I did low carb with calorie counting, worked great, but I couldn’t keep it past a year).

The issue with a lot of these things is that it’s darn hard to get the truly sugar free AND the great tasting. Depending on your dietary requirements, I think a very (4 oz cup) small cup of good real stuff rarely may be more satisfactory than lots of cups of crap stuff. But that’s IMHO, and as always, follow the advice of your health or nutrition professional before rando me from the internet!

If you DO decide to try that option, consider something like a Mexican or premium drinking chocolate which is already lower in sugar/no sugar added, designed for small quantities, and going to be damn delicious.

Definitely worth trying.

However, I’ve found drinking chocolates too fatty. The cocoa butter leaves a weird mouth feel that I’m not looking for when drinking. (As opposed to eating it and I want that melting mouth feel.) Once I switched to cocoas, it was what I was expecting.

There’s a lot of different cocoas. Expensive ones tend to be tastier, although some of them leave more cocoa butter in than others. The cocoa butter is great for eating (like brownies or fudge), but ruins the drinks, so I always see how much fat there is.

I have been drinking this stuff for years now - Crio Bru. It is cacao roasted, ground and then brewed like coffee. I use a French press and just add a splash of almond milk. The Maya blend with cayenne and cinnamon is great.

This is what I do, and I recommend getting some high quality cocoa. My wife got me some amazing cocoa powder from King Arthur Flour - I believe this one. It’s got 3 grams of carbs per serving, 2 of which are dietary fiber. I’ll mix that with some 2% milk, vanilla extract, and Lakanto golden fake sugar (erythritol). Tastes just like the real thing - very chocolately, and completely hides the fake sugar taste. It’s my go to “sweet treat” that is as close to “guilt free” as I’ve found.

Awesome suggestions. Thanks again everyone!

I like the different flavors available. I make it in a little metal apparatus intended for making Vietnamese drip coffee.
