I want to take up running but I get bad shin splints on the outside of my shins.

That website says that this can be due to a muscle imbalance between the shin muscles and the calf muscles. That actually doesn’t sound unrealistic as my calves are 17" and I can do 400 lbs for reps on the calf raise machine. Are there special shoes I can try to see if they help with this condition? I don’t know if this is the cause but I figure there may be a shoe or ankle brace I can try to see if it helps.
