Is there an entity that keeps track of family sizes?

We all have heard the “2.5 children” stat that is supposed to represent how many kids the average family has. But are their solid statistics that show what the real spread is? (meaning _% of families have 2 kids, _% have 3 etc) Obviously there are many families with 2 kids, but how many with 3, 4, or more?

In Canada, it’s Statistics Canada. Here is the page where reporting on family data, including family size, can be obtained.

This (warning: CSV format) file from the Census should give you all you need for the U.S.

The U.S. census collects that information, but it’s a pain to search for online.

This .pdf document says that average household size is 2.59, but average family size is 3.14. (Definitions at bottom.)

Here a different page that lists number of family and non-family households by size.

There’s probably better ways to break this down, but I’m not looking at 12:30 am.
