I do a great deal of hiking, and I’m done carrying in coffee to brew. I tried some Foldgers instant the other day and it tasted like ass. Can anyone recommend some quality instant?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Folger’s is definitely nasty. I drink Nescafe’s Taster’s Choice, and it’s much much better. Also the the water you use makes a lot of difference. I drink the same instant and home and the office and if I don’t use bottled water at the office, the coffee’s horrible.
Are you using fresh filtered water? Hopefully you’re not using iodine-treated water for coffee, because that’ll make a big difference.
Yes, especially the dark roast which is harder to find. By the way Taster’s Choice is available in single packs which I’ve never seen in stores.
Also, have you considered the individual packs of coffee grounds packaged in tea bags?
Mr. S is a javahead, and he actually like the Folger’s “tea bag” style instant coffee. We don’t have any in the house right now, so I can’t tell you the actual product name, but it works just like a tea bag.
(Of course he prefers to just make himself a latte or espresso out of the good stuff, but in a pinch the Folger’s will do.)
That’s what I came in here to mention. Better than any instant coffee I’ve ever tried, imho, and not bad at all as long as you keep them fresh (I store mine in a zippy bag in the fridge), and make it with decent water, and steep it for about twice as long as the directions say. Add a generous amount of half&half, and some Splenda, and you’re good to go!
I love Taster’s Choice. But I miss when Chock Full ‘O’ Nuts used to have an instant…'twas yummy!
I have heard that the Folgers singles “tea-bags” contain at least some instant coffee. But they aren’t too bad, whaddaya expect for instant coffee? Hint: use 2 bags for a single cup, it’s almost palatable. Try M’adaglia D’oro (sp) instant for a so-so instant, freeze-dried version.
All,
Thanks much for all the help!
I’ve tried the tea bag coffee a few of you discussed. It does seem to be a mix of 1/2 regular coffee and 1/2 instant. I’ll revisit that.
I’ve found that Folgers “Tea Bag” coffee is good. Very good in my opinion. One bag to one cup of boiling water. Friends gave me some so I don’t know how much it costs.
I wonder if it would be possible to use regular coffee and a reusable tea ball. I’m gonna have to try that tomorrow morning.
I was also going to recommend the Taster’s Choice “robust” line. It’s a darker roast than the regular instant.
I think they’re all pretty much worth a damn. Certainly none of them is worthy of salvation.
d&r
That’s it! I couldn’t think of the name.
Is there an instant coffee worth a damn?
No.
spifflog what is the problem with real coffee?
The weight? The volume?
At that point you might as well use a french press.
Not if you’re backpacking. A tea ball would be a LOT lighter. Not to mention simpler.
Another vote for the coffee singles, we get them for our clients to make their own coffee in the waiting room and they smell like fresh brewed and it doesn’t taste too bad either. Both Folger’s and Maxwell House make the singles.
I do a lot of hiking too - but have never been of the “saw off the handle of the toothbrush” variety, scrimping on every last smidgen of bulk or weight. Definitely, bring some of the Folgers singles as a convenience, but somewhere in your rucksack there should be a container of honest-by-god coffee, some things aren’t worth skimping on, and coffee is definitely one of them.
I’ve been hiking for a long time, and like most things in my pack, I’ve gone back and forth over the years. Part of it is “all” the equipment I need. The coffee, filters, plastic filter holder, creamer, mug. And it seems to take, relatively, quite a while to brew the coffee on the trail. Usually 3-4 pours if you will. By the time that is done, the coffee usually isn’t all that hot. Sometimes it’s dark by the time we settle in, and the whole process can be arduous in the dark. So I was considering simplifying and quickening the whole process with one baggie of instant.
Thanks for the effort!
I checked and the wording is actually “gourmet roast.”
