I’m investigating funding a comics project through Kickstarter. Kickstarter supports creative projects by crowdsourcing sponsorship.
Creators propose a project and a total amount to donate within a time limit, and sponsors pledge to donate. If pledges totalling to the planned donation amount are received within the limit, the donations are transferred, and the total amount goes to the creator. If pledges totalling to the planned donation amount are not received by the time limit, NO donations are transferred, and the project does not go forward. (It is possible to have pledges totalling more than the planned donation amount, of course.)
There is no other formal obligation other than a firm date to deliver the project by, but I suspect there is quite a bit of informal social responsibility. Creators maintain blogs to show their progress, for example.
Wretchedly, Kickstarter’s payment processor, Amazon Payments, requires a US presence. I do not have such. Is there an equivalent to Kickstarter available outside the US?
