Is there any connection between sweating and craving alcohol?

My friend is a raging alcoholic and made a strange discovery: if she is sweating, the desire to drink goes away. So far, she’s tried being in a hot car, exercise, lifting heavy objects, and wearing a sweater while wrapped in a blanket. In all cases, she doesn’t want to drink afterwards.

What could the connection be?

Beats me. I crave a beer after a long hike or working outdoors in the summer sun. That’s a craving for beer in particular, though, and other alcoholic drinks wouldn’t go down well. This might be particular to her.

However, many people (myself included) often aren’t hungry immediately after exercise. This can be partly because your body is using most of its energy and blood flow during exercise to power that exercise, so it draws blood and energy away from digestion. It’s possible that that sort of thing is related to what’s going on. Does your friend crave non-alcoholic drinks after sweating?

Nope.

Does she sweat during hangovers? It could just be the association with that. From what I’ve read, most people absolutely want nothing to do with alcohol during hangovers.

A good check would be to see if the sweating produces any slight feelings of hangover, like headache and nausea/disorientation.

Might have something to do with dehydration? Though then she might still want to drink less dehydrating things, which you say she doesn’t.
