Is there any way to stop Islamist terrorism?

On the other hand, mind if I borrow that as my campaign slogan?

Announce the IMMEDIATE mass conversion of all American Jews and Christians to Islam .
Appoint a Grand Mufti of the United Styates
Open congress witha prayer by an Imam.
There-that oughta doe it! :smack:

The current spat of terrorism didn’t happen overnight. It was planned years ago and included the induction of children into a mindset of self-destruction. Until Muslims are prevented from the indoctrination of children into an environment of pure hatred it will have an inexhaustible source of suicide bombers.

I disagree with your premise that converting to a strict form of Islam would work because there is no indication that different Muslim sects can work and play well together in Islamic countries. What makes the religion so dangerous is a lack of centralized leadership. Any man who has logged enough Quran hrs can declare himself an Imam and start an army. There is no certification or dedicated platform within each sect. The closest thing to an organized religious hierarchy is Turkey’s political system. They control the religious doctrine right down to the Friday sermon which is sent to each Mosque.

Islam has to fix itself from within. They need a Martin Luther level of reform that transforms the religion into one of peace. Muslims have to want the change or it won’t happen and it certainly won’t happen overnight. All we can do is promote the personal freedom necessary to achieve it.

Oh, no, you misunderstand me. The first step is to remove all troops from Islamic lands.

Then all Islamic nations must become democratic. Without military invasion or ruining their economies. It’s something of a catch-22. In order to cease (well, minimize, even the US has its McVeighs, KKK, and Weathermen) terrorism, all nations must be democratic. But how do we persuade the Sauds and Saddams of the world to step down if not at economic or actual gunpoint, which can only stir up more anti-American violence?

Magiver I think has hit the key to the problem. Decentrilization is the real problem.

He says Islam needs a “Martin Luther”. Problem is, Martin Luther attempted to reform “the church”, but in Islam “the church” doesn’t exist, because it’s so diverse.

Better than a Martin Luther, however, would be a Martin Luther King.

A schoolteacher friend of told me the other day about the visit of the Imam of Aylesbury, a town near me, to her Catholic elementary school.

Imam Abdul Dayan gave a talk to the kids about the nature of Islam, and the importance of Jesus within the religion. But every time Abdul Dayan said “Mohammed” or “Jesus”, as is the Islamic way, he followed the name up with “peace be upon him”. After a few times, the kids started to giggle, because to them it sounded so funny. Every time he said “peace be upon him”, they giggled.

How did Abdul Dayan react to this “disrespect”? Outrage?

No, he started to giggle along with the kids. He tried to carry on talking, but every time he said “peace be upon him”, the kids laughed, and that set him off again. Until he and the kids were falling around laughing, and he was guffawing, slapping his thighs, and wiping his eyes with mirth.

That was on July 1st, 2005 - a week before the London bombings. The next time my friend saw Abdul Dayan, he was on the TV, saying:

OK, maybe not a Martin Luther King, but certainly some kind of Desmond Tutu. But who in Islam going to listen to him, apart from us westerners who agree with him?

We need to support and nurture more Abdul Dayans, and stop distracting ourselves with this generalised anti-Islamic nonsense.
