Is there anyone in your life that you specifically turn to for opinions/thoughts/suggestions for various things in life (movie or music choices for example) because you know they will give you what not to do?
And because I know my wording is all retarded, an example:
I have a friend whose name may or may not be Michael. This friend has a taste in movies that is pretty much the exact opposite of mine. He watches movies all the time so I know I can count on him to have seen most every new movie that hits theaters. Using this knowledge, I know that if he says a movie is a good and that he heartily endorses, I should stay far away from it.
Anyone in your life like that? Doesn’t have to be for movies and can be for far more serious subjects in life as well.
I used to have a college classmate like that; also, the movies and books critic for a chain of local newspapers. I discovered the critic because his whole article (a full page!) on TMNT was “this movie sucks because there is no such thing as talking ninja turtles!” - ‘right, so you totally missed the point but can’t find anything more specific to criticize? Gotcha’.
His opinion on Pérez-Reverte’s Alatriste series was “this shit is like reading The Three Musketeers!” - ‘fingering the four, count 'em, four, much-read copies of same which could be found at her parent’s house And that is bad, how?’
Well, I have an old friend that I played music with on the road for almost 8 years. He’s a really nice guy. He’s also a coke addict, deadbeat, liar and negligent father.
Pretty much whenever I come across an ethical question, I ask myself what would R do?
then I do the opposite.
Hasn’t really failed me yet.
Hoping that someday, he’ll be remembered for something other than as an example to others…but not holding my breath.
My sister on men’s clothes. When Christmas shopping, my mother asks my sister her opinion on clothes she plans to buy for me. If my sister hates it or even mildly dislikes it, my mom buys it because she knows I’ll like it.
I once worked with a guy named Ron that I’m sure was the source for the line, “You’re such an inspiration for the ways I will never, ever choose to be”.
My mother, in particular for interpersonal relationships, and especially so for marriage stuff. If I’m really pissed off at Mr. Horseshoe, and something pops into my head to say, and I can think “That’s exactly what Mom would say to Dad,” then I know it would be reallyreallyreally horrible thing to say to him.
The local rag that carries Cecil’s column is the Austin Chronicle.
I usually have no trouble figuring out who to vote for in most elections, but when there’s a minor office or judgeship in which there are two contenders I’ve never heard of? I’ll just vote against whoever the Chronicle endorses.
