Is there more geological activity than usual?

Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a lot more large earthquakes and volcanic activity than what normally is on the radar. I can’t remember when there has been so much news about geological activity as has happened in the last few years. Is that just perception based on more media availability, or are we going through a period of higher than normal seismic activity?

We did a thread on this soon after the Japanese earthquake and the conclusion was that it’s an above average year, but not significantly so. It does have a lot to do with heightened awareness, more press coverage, and ubiquitous video cameras.

So how many more big ones do we need before it gets significant?

It may also be the geological activity has become more noticeable. There are fewer uninhabited areas and more structures being built. Plus we are monitoring geological activity more and developing better means of detecting it.
