I’m trying to find a place where I can send my work or can post it that people can read it and give me feedback. I’ve had lots of people read my short stories, but they are all people I knew. I need an unbiased critique, someone to be brutally honest.
Join a writing group. There must be some in your area. Or join an online one. You can find one at http://www.hatrack.com/writers/index.shtml
Remember two things, though. 1) Posting the full text of your work online IS first publishing of your story. You cannot then go and try to sell it to a publisher looking for first publishing rights.
2) With any critique, remember that you get what you pay for. What qualifications does the critiquer have? Opinions are like, well, you’ve heard the saying.
Do they give reasons why something should be changed? Do they tell you as to which parts need improvement and why? Finally, if you’re in a group, what are you doing for them? Don’t be a leech, looking constantly at what others can do for you. There is no “me me me” in writing groups (though there are a couple of I’s).
I’ve had some good, useful feedback at Critters. It’s specifically fantasy, science fiction and horror though.
