Is there such a thing as good Mexican popular music?

And if so, why don’t we hear it in Mexican restaurants?*

*alternate question: If there is a God, why was the recording of a Hispanic version of ABBA’s “Fernando” permitted?

And I would like more chips and salsa, please.

From my point of view, most Mexican “pop” is really bland…but I was raised more Brazilian music.
Luis Miguel is usually considered the best major singer. Marco Antonio Solis and Juan Gabriel are also big - and I never really got into them - I’m sure someone else here knows Mexican music better than I do.
There are several decent, good, and great Mexican rock bands. Mana is the most famous, followed by Jaguares, Caifanes, Maldita Vecindad, Santa Sabina, Tijuana No, Cafe Tacuba, and so on.
And there are punk/rap groups like Molotov…it’s not all guys in big hats…like Vicente Fernandez.

ABBA were sort of going for the Pan-European thing back then. SSo I think it was for the Spanish market…

This is more of an opinion than a General Question.

I’ll move it to IMHO for you.

saudade, you forgot el tri. and i must say, after years in bay area kitchens, i really like banda music. flaco jimenez sez: borracho number one!

I’ll second saudade’s recommendation of Cafe Tecuba. And I agree that there’s a lot of neat-o Brazilian music out there. (I have yet to listen to Caetano Veloso’s most recent CD. I’m moving on it, though.)

And Marco Antonio Solis is quite possibly the most cheesy, melodramatic sap to have ever been recorded. Avoid his stuff at all costs. Blech, blech, blech. Ick.

Incidentally–neat name, saudade. I wish English had a word for that state of being.

Please don’t tell me that Selena died in vain!

If you’re talking about the omnipresent, neverchanging Mexican polka music with the accordians on the radio, no. But live mariachi is an acquired taste. I love some of it. In the right context…

Y volver,volver, volveerrrrrrrrrrr…
