After listening to Anne Murray’s song Snowbird, I got to thinking is there, or was there ever an actual bird called a snowbird?
Or is it just a generic term for any bird that hangs around all winter?

Well, there is a Snow Bunting.
Also, a Snow Goose.
The Snow Goose is somewhat better eating, if you’re into that kind of thing. Not much meat on those buntings.
Sure there is. I’ve been there many times
As Anne Murray was Canadian, I presume the snowbirds to which she was referring are the Canucks that drive to Florida every winter.
But the buntings have less grease.
We get a fair amount in Vegas as well.
I suppose is is the Eastern Snowbird that migrates through Georgia.
What doesn’t?
It’s not just Canadians, there’s lots of Snowbirds all over the northern US, too.
Which I find ironic, since I read a lot more stories of the elderly dying in the south during heat waves when their ACs break then I do of them dying from the cold when their furnaces break. Probably because the latter happens less often, and is more likely to be noticed sooner and taken care of right away.
