Is this a hairstyle fad now? Does it have a name?

I first noticed it in a recent episode of Nancy Drew. Two braids coiled into small, tight balls on or near the top of the head. Then I saw the style again in a new episode of The Sex Lives of College Girls, and again tonight in episode 1 of Lost in Space season 3.

The Nancy Drew version:

Carrie Fisher once described Princess Leia’s hairstyle as “stereo hairphones”.
Those are “stereo hairbuds”.

ETA: no idea what they’re actually called.

I’d call it a variation on “space buns,” which is sort of a blanket term for two buns/pigtail buns. Maybe something like “half-up braided space buns” if I were, like, making a Youtube tutorial for how to do them. But yes, they are pretty “in” right now. Braided hairdos in general, including pigtails/variations on pigtails for adults seem to be big right now. I see them in movies and shows all the time. I wear a variation myself sometimes.

And, in fact, Carrie’s daughter, Billie Lourd, who had small parts in the three Star Wars sequel films, appeared wearing such a hairstyle in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015).

I’ve seen one on tv, never in the wild: usually little Black girls in commercials. The round balls of hair on their heads look like Mickey Mouse ears from the front.

I’ve often heard them called “hummer handles”… Hopefully you can imagine why.

That hair style really makes me nostalgic for Sailor Moon because that’s exactly how that characters hair was styled, I wonder if it’s a deliberate homage in some cases.

I think it’s cute. I’ve got enough hair but not enough talent to make it do that. Besides, I’m probably too old…sigh.

Modnote: This is inappropriately sexual. Please don’t do it again.

Most prominent one I can think of lately is Lily in Sex Education

(I have no idea why that’s a reply to @Son_of_a_Rich )

Forgot about that one, but seeing it in my head now. (But she was The Character Most Likely To Wear A Chicken As A Hat anyway.)
