Did you have the Rachel or the Halle? I remember the French Roll and Dookie braids being big in the early 90s with black women. Of course there was also the big hair 80s. So what popular hairstyles did you have?
I had a perm - a ‘curly’ rather than a ‘corkscrew,’ I think. I think nearly every girl in my school did when I was 12 years old. The ridiculous thing is that I have naturally curly hair anyway, but it was the wrong type of curls.
Back in the '80s, I had a spiral perm. My hair was thick and shoulder length and the perm was great. All I had to do was wash my hair once a week (condition daily), wrap my hair in a towel and just shake it when it was damp and my hair was done. Of course, I couldn’t get a brush through my hair for about two years, but I was very happy with the results.
I had a perm in the 80’s, of course. I couldn’t do the huge bangs-poofy thing, though–curling irons and my hair have never gotten along. I went to a spiral perm as soon as they came in, but I don’t know that there was any discernible difference.
Of course, I actually do have curly hair. When I started getting perms at 12 it wasn’t, but by the time I was 18 it really was curly and I just didn’t know. I’ve been unfashionably curly for years now.
Very long, very straight hair late '60s through most of the '70s – the “very straight” is what it does naturally, though I guess the “very long” should be attributed to fashion.
For the last quarter century, it’s been very straight, ranging from chin length to below my collarbones, bangs off and on – all these very minor permutations based more on my whims than any particular fashion.
I had the long, straight (ish), middle-parted hair for most of my high school years.
I had a spiral perm in the '80s. I don’t think I ever got another one, though, because that particular perm wrap pulled my hair so. I mean, I know it hurts to be beautiful, but that sucked.
Closest thing I have as evidence is a later hideous hairstyle after the shaved sides grew out and I’d trimmed the fried foot of hair from all the bleaching: punkmomma | Sixteen. ha! | bellabrigido | Flickr
After that I spent the next few years ironing and crimping my curls. Curly perms were popular, with all bangs, but I never cared for that style.
None of those, but I do have one of those inverted bob hair cuts that everyone got excited about recently. They’re out of style already, but I’m keeping mine perhaps forever, because it’s the best thing to ever happen to me.
I still kind of have the Jennifer Aniston 'do. Well, it’s layered because my hair is so thick I pretty much have to. It’s not as all over the place either…yeah, all right. I guess it’s not really her 'do. Most people wouldn’t look at me and scream, “EARLY 90s SITCOM HAIR!” I hope.
I am currently partaking in bumpits. Between the hair and the super thick eyeliner, I’m not sure if I’m channeling Priscilla Presley on her wedding day or a Jersey Shore guidette.
Yeah, it’s pretty huge, thick hair. It’s less about my fascination of the Jersey set and more about my love of the early sixties look. It’s not a regular look or anything–I’ve only bumpited twice. The way I see it, I need photos of some horrid hair trend so my kids can mock me in twenty years. Though if it gets too ridiculous, maybe I will shelf them. Though you’ll get my eyeliner from my cold dead hands!
Yep, I totally did the spiral perm and curling-ironed bangs. I guess I’m currently rocking a version of the Rachel - my hair is now not quite to my shoulders, and layered. I’m keeping it a little sleeker and straighter than Jennifer Aniston’s on Friends, though - not as teased to get the volume at the crown.
I did the Alyson Hannigan for a time. I had shorter layers over the forehead due to my huge forehead needing some cover, but it was close to that for a few years.
