Is this a scam to get me to verify my e-mail address? (Second try)

When I posted this before, the OP didn’t make it into the thread. (That’s happened before, but not to me. Probably some glitch with the new programs.) Anyway, I received this from “Monica” with an e-mail address at “mail46.networksecuritydept.com”:

I don’t know anyone named “Monica”. I also don’t sell subscriptions, so I don’t have anything to cancel. A domain that has “mail46” in it is a bit suspicious too.

Is this a scam to get me to reply, thus verifying that my e-mail address is a valid one?

Probably. This makes my spidey sense tingle:

If not, “Monica” will eventually have to send another email out to the service she wants to unsubscribe from.

In any case, don’t reply.

No question in my mind it’s a scam to get you to reply so that they can sell your Email address. In the unlikely event that your Email closely resembled some magazine’s unsubscribe script’s Email and this truly was accidental, you’d get hundreds of these Emails, not just one.

Got another one, this time from “monica01” at “mail62…” Definitely a scam.

Also, on the tiny chance that it wasn’t a scam, presumably Monica would still get whatever it was she was trying to cancel, and will send another request - this time to the correct address.

So, either way there is no point in replying.

If you’re losing sleep over it,

Go over to hotmail, create a new account, and send Monica an email from that account saying that you got a strange message. Don’t be too specific about the message. Don’t mention your real email address. See if Monica sends you a thank you. Then abandon the hotmail account.

The only way this could work against you would be if their machine sent every message from a unique address. (mail46 maps to your address and your address alone)

Ah, never mind. Just ignore it.

Or, on the other hand, maybe Monica is real and destined to be the future Mrs. L.A.

I get stuff like that lately. One of them was something like, ‘sorry I couldn’t make the appt…’
Its spam.

[fight some ignorance please]

What is it about “mail46” and “mail62” that is suspicious?
[/fsip]

Well, it implies that there is a mail01-mail45. Who needs 46 mail servers except a spammer?
