Tax Clarity was created to help you decipher what the tax plans by both presidential candidates mean to you personally. As with all campaign promises, it’s very difficult to cut through the rhetoric and REALLY understand what a candidate is promising. To this end, we have created some simple-to-use calculators. The most popular (and most relevant) of these calculators are the ones that help you determine your personal tax savings as it relates to income taxes.

We have also created some calculator resources to help you figure out what else, beside income tax reform, the candidates are proposing in areas of education savings, retirement savings, estate taxes and environmental help rewards.

METHOD
The formula used to determine your tax savings was retrieved from both candidates’ web pages (see here for Gore’s plan and here for Bush’s plan.) With both candidates, there was plenty of vague and arcane language used to describe their proposals, as well as some real, quantifiable and concrete promises. We had our staff study these proposals and cut through the rhetoric to help you quantify your actual tax savings.

I don’t know enough about taxes to be able to tell if this is accurate or not. The calculator seems simple enough to use. Any experts out there willing to call this one way or the other?

Unbiased answer: I just checked it out, and it seems to be accurate. They give their method of calculation and, as far as I can tell, it matches the real tax plans. It’s not 100% accurate, though. It’s left out some of you other basic write-offs, only including the biggest changes. It’s not lying, but I wouldn’t base the election on it.

Biased answer: It points out all the stupid hoops you have to jump through to get anything done under Gore’s plan.
