Is this art, or the random splash of paint by a drunk monkey?

You and mobo85 are too kind.

I was going for stark contrast between twisted beauty and nauseating ugliness. Sort of “pretty/ugly.” I guess pretty ugly is close enough.

Art.

I’m not completely thrilled with it, but art it is.

Remember that the designation “art” need not carry any connotations of “good.”

There are aspects to it which are interesting. I’d like to echo the sentiments of others–go get some more training!

I don’t mind the idea, and I generally like this sort of abstract-expressionist-esque use of color (my favorite painters are the Kandinsky, Klee, Marc, that whole “Blue Riders” school). However, it looks much more like a quick sloppy study than any sort of complete work.

Compositionally, it a bit off, and the brush strokes have no rhythm or structure to them. The colors kind of bleed and melt into each other, but not in a very pleasing way. They all kind of turn muddy. Even if that’s your intention, I don’t think it quite works. I think with the colors you’re using, you’d be better off going for starker contrast, perhaps working in a different medium like acrylic or oil. And the placement of the swirling colors seems a bit haphazard.

I don’t really feel the sense of an underlying order to the painting, as I do when I look at the works of most abstract artists that I admire. I could sort of seeing it as a study to form the basis of a fully fleshed out idea, but as it stands, it’s a rough sketch at best.

It was meant as a throwaway work, and I’ll probably throw it away. But thinking about it some more (and reading all of your comments), it might be worth doing it again but putting some more work into it.

Crap. That sugar and spice post was me.

Since you put it that way, I would say that this watercolor of yours is a slam-dunk triumph.

If you’re seriously going to chuck it, I’ll PayPal you the price of a poster tube and mailing to the UK.

You are too kind. For now, I think I’ll hang onto it for reference. But eventually – why not?

OK. As and when you’re ready to part with it, please could you PM me?
