Is this being normal or a passive aggressive jerk?

** Long winded back story:**

I own 2 automobiles. One I drive in Indiana. One is driven by my daughter who is in college in Michigan. Thus, from late August till mid May, the car is kept in Michigan. I found out in early August that the car insurance company I had did not “work” in Michigan, and that if my daughter suffered an accident in Michigan and the company discovered that is was “garaged” there, they wouldn’t pay out. As a result, I found myself needing new car insurance in August.

Thinking I might get a good discount, I decided to go with the company that has my house insurance. However, the actual broker with whom I got my house insurance has their office way on the other side of town. So I stopped into my local branch and was told that they could start the process, call it over to the branch with the house insurance and get me the discount. They also quoted me a very, very good rate. The next day the house insurance office called and said that they got different numbers than the local office I went to ( more expensive), and thus I should complete everything over there and they’d join it all together later. Fair enough - I had the policy written and put down two months payment.

Three weeks later I got a letter from the central office saying that on further review I was not eligible for the cheap rate I was given because of a speeding ticket my daughter had in 2006, and that my policy was canceled effective September 27. I called the house insurance person to see what the heck was going on, and was told that the local office guy filled out the forms wrong, which was why I got such a great rate and was then subsequently dumped. She told me she’d enter the correct information and call me the next day with the new rates and get me fixed up with a policy. She even repeated my cell phone number back to me and assured me I’d hear from her right away.

That was last week. On Tuesday (5 days before my insurance expired) I called her again to see what was going on. I was told that the computer ate all the numbers but she was going to enter them in again and call me back that afternoon.

I took this as her way of telling me to take my business elsewhere. So I did - I called another company and now have car and new house insurance (for the group discount). Easy peasy.

Again, despite the fact that as far as she knows I will be without any insurance in 3 days, not a peep from house insurance person.

Now for the question:

Should I call house insurance person and tell her that I’ve taken my business elsewhere? Or should I not bother and if she does call me back, then tell her that her services are no longer needed?
On the one hand I have no obligation to them, and, to be honest, feel like I’ve been jerked around by her and the entire company. On the other hand, perhaps right now she’s wearing her fingers to bloody stumps trying to input my data so that I will be covered and I could save her hours of frustrating work.
Thoughts?

Nope.

Yep.

That’s how I see it.

Highly doubtful. At best they are incompetent, but “The computer ate the numbers” doesn’t pass the sniff test.

I’d leave her hanging. I feel you’ve been jerked around, too, and don’t owe her a phone call.

My guess is that she already knows that you’ve found new coverage. You should be getting a refund on the remainder of your house policy.

You would think they would call you and ask why you didn’t renew, but given how they’ve treated you, who knows? Not your problem, unless you think your feedback would really help them improve.

Call her and tell her that you have new coverage and that you need to terminate your old policy. Many companies may have problems with you being doubly insured and may cancel you when the find out that you have two policies if she does manage to get your old policy up and running again. Also, FWIW, insurance is a business where everything must be approved by underwriting and errors inputting stuff into the system can force them to take a lot more time than would usually be necessary to get things up and running for you again. This doesn’t excuse her not calling you and keeping you updated on the situation at all but it may explain the delay in fixing your coverage.

Thanks for the input so far. As luck would have it, my home insurance was up for renewal Oct 1 so there won’t be much overlap.

I think I’ll call her tomorrow afternoon if I don’t hear from her sooner.

I would write a letter. Make it simple and to the point. Letters are permanent and a good way to make a point.

I would definitely call to cancel and follow up in writing. You could end up paying double premiums or one will go through and mess up the other. As much fun as it would be to just ignore them as they’ve apparently ignored you, it could mean trouble for you in the long run.
