There’s nothing that indisputably says these two men are gay. But they’ve been placed in a situation where they’re embracing and one of them refers to themselves as a couple. So I’m wondering if the commercial is intentionally designed to make you wonder if they’re gay without saying it.
Maybe they should have cast Steve Carell and Stephen Colbert.
I was going to say no (I watched it before I read the OP). One was just tackling the other, but when he referred to them as a ‘couple’, I wouldn’t say it was a ‘gay vibe’, I’d say they’re a gay couple. I don’t think there’s a question there, at least not in my mind.
Rewatching it, he said ‘we agreed to get rid of cable’ which implies they live together, so it’s not even like you could infer that by couple they mean friends. Also, the couple comment came in a sentence where they said that they argue ‘just like any couple’.
So, to me, it’s clear enough that I wouldn’t have questioned it any more than seeing a commercial with a family and questioning whether they were actually a family or just a bunch of random friends.
IMHO, if you’re questioning it, it seems like you’re hoping the answer is ‘no, they’re not a gay couple, phew, what a relief’. But really, who cares.
There’s no way those two aren’t gay. They’re living together and they say they’re just like any other couple. No, we don’t see them kissing or anything, but then, how often do you see an opposite-sex couple in a commercial kissing?
Of course they’re a gay couple. I thought that was the point.
And, they’re STILL the same kind of jerk assholes as the people in every other Sunday Ticket ad. I don’ know why DTV thinks that makes people want to buy the service.
For us old farts, having commercials with gay, Black, or smart women just Wasn’t Done when we were in the 60s and 70s. So actually seeing such a commercial out there is still a bit of a shock. A nice shock. We want to be sure it is what it seems to be. That advertisers have finally decided to advertise to all their markets.
But the real shock is that it took so long. That’s why we care. Maybe it’s a sign that the world is getting better, every day.
Look at the backlash against the Cheerios commercial with the mixed-race couple. Why should anyone care? But they did.
But if you had any doubts, check out the youtube comments. Their interpretation is that it’s a gay couple so whether DirecTV meant them to be or not is kind of irrelevant.
If it shouldn’t make a difference to anyone then it shouldn’t matter if people discuss the subject. There have been plenty of commercials with a straight vibe where people speculate about the relationship of a couple in the commercial. Nothing wrong with doing that for a gay couple. The OP didn’t say “OMG! There’s a <gasp> sinful homer-sexual couple in a commercial!”.
I think what is so remarkable about the ad is how normal it is presented. The fact that the two gays guys seem just as douchey as the other guys in those commercials is progress, I guess.
Can’t be gay. I mean, it’s about FOOTBALL! and no gay guys are into football! Gay women, maybe, but not gay guys. Don’t they have some flowers to arrange?
