Is this license plate offensive?

Saw this on an SUV on Friday night.

TRIPLEK

Did NOT get a look at the driver.

Your thoughts?

I’m slow. Help me out here. How is that potentially offense? Also, what does it mean at all.

three k’s

Perhaps Katherine Kelly Krenshaw didn’t think things through when she got her plate?

KKK = Klan

I wouldn’t want it on my car, that’s for sure.

Celebrating the KKK?

I can be a knee-jerk offenderati (offenderatus?) but I think interpreting that as KKK is a reach.

It could be three strikeouts – i.e. the pitcher struck out all three batters in an inning. (‘K’ is the abbreviation for strikeout in baseball scoring)

:smack:

With that out of the way, I can’t get offended right off the bat at it. I’d wait for the whole story.

It doesn’t necessarily mean the owner is a KKK member, but that is the first connotation that springs to mind. I would assume the owner is either a racist or naive / stupid for not realizing people might take it that way. It seems like a good way to have your car vandalized. If it was a friend or family member who mistakenly had the plate done for some other reason, I would be sure to point out the obvious connotation there.

I did not get the KKK connection on first glance. I read it as “TRIP-LEK”. Kinda WTF?

Reading it as “Triple K”–yeah, I can see how that could be a problem. In theory, I suppose the driver could be a huge fan of retired wrestler “Killer Karl Kox”, or the baseball related meaning…but the simplest explanation would be KKK.

There are several Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternities/sororities out there but they go by Tri-Kap usually.

Slight Hijack.

My daughter’s plate is NRGBUNY

It has been mis-iterperted a lot.

I read it the same way, and thought it was a Klingon dessert or something.

Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me recently had a bit about a tofu lover whose license application for ILVTOFU was rejected for it’s (possibly) unintended double meaning. Here’s a YouTube clip of the news story.

But, yeah, as to the OP, the first thing that jumped to mind was “KKK.”

I would think it was something from Star Trek or some other Sci-fi show. I did not make the KKK connection until I saw it posted here.

Similar. I first read it as “TRI - PLEK”, and in three Pleks, whatever those are.

The Triplek is the next evolutionary state of the Dalek.

Triple K is the name of a company that “sells handmade quality products and accessories for Sportsman and Law Enforcement.”

I have never heard anyone say “He’s a member of the Triple K” or “Why don’t you join the Triple K.” It’s always said as Kay-Kay-Kay

Not offensive to me. As others have pointed out, there are a lot of alternate interpretations. The Klan is not ever referred to as the “triple K.” I actually thought strikeouts. Perhaps the driver is a pitcher?

It did cross my mind, so I think someone who spent a little time thinking might reconsider. But if you really wanted to show that you struck batters out, would you opt for “KKK” or “TRIPLEK?”

Now if I saw that place and a stars and bars, I’d keep my distance (Black dude).

I think it’s one of those situations where, if anyone wanted to make reference to the KKK in their plate, they’d have to use a less-than-obvious end-around to include it (since I suspect more obvious examples–“KKK AOK”, etc.–are part of the banned list all DMVs have). That’s not to say that’s what the intention of the user was, but it was certainly the first thing that came to my mind. After all, anyone who means to offend knows they can’t be gratuitous; rather, the approach has to be innocuous and under-the-radar so as to more easily get away with it (“3M3TIB” is a good example).

It certainly wouldn’t surprise me if that was the intention, and I can’t believe some friend or acquaintance wouldn’t have mentioned the possibility of this being interpreted in the more obvious way (presuming the user is indeed innocent).

I’d go with “K King” or something along those lines…
