It looks real. At least as far as i can tell none of the wolves are duplicates of each other.
I’m pretty sure those are coyotes. Many places have no limit on them.
Snope say the picture is real but that the animals appear to be coyotes.
It is hard to tell since the photo has been reduced in size and the meta tags are missing. I did notice some artifacts around the guys that made me think they might have been photoshopped in.
The picture seems a bit suspect since the limit of two wolf tags per person. They might have had additional trapping tags. With two guys, that is 10 tags total.
It is just a basic fact of wildlife management, that if you don’t control the wolf population, then you will run out of elk and deer.
Well if those are coyotes, then that would explain it. Many places consider coyotes varmints.
From the hunters’ points of view, anyway. If this was actually the case, all the elk and deer would have disappeared thousands of years ago. Wolves in Alaska are managed by a board made up of hunting enthusiasts and are killed solely for the purpose of artificially increasing the available targets for hunters. It has nothing to do with “management”.
When prey populations rise to unsustainable levels, predator levels also tend to rise because there is more food available. When the prey animals become reduced by predators, the predator population declines through fewer new pups and starvation. Case in point are the rabbit and lynx populations, which are closely tied together and fluctuate just fine without human intervention.
Those definitely look like coyotes to me. Not sure why anyone would be particularly proud of hunting coyotes, but if they get ten bucks a tail, well that’s um…beer for a couple of weekends, anyway. Minus gas and ammo, of course.
Yeah those are coyotes. My father got from a hunting trip once and I opened up the freezer chest a few days later only to be startled by a fully frozen coyote laying on top. I quickly shut it but wasn’t upset in the least. I love dogs and wolves but coyotes are the degenerate canine gang members of the wildlife ghetto. I wouldn’t be upset if they became extinct. They were responsible for killing a female hiker in Maine along with a number of pets and even some small children threats in Massachusetts. I had one in my yard once. I would have popped a cap in his ass in a second if I could have. I hate coyotes and I don’t think many people are true fans of them.
When I was in Afghanistan the over population of coyotes on the air base was so severe that we flew a 64 year old civilian trapper from New Mexico to thin the population. In 4 months he had personally killed nearly 200 coyotes.
The guy was an awesome person and now a life long friend but that’s beside the point.
Emphasis added. “Coyote” was slang for feral dogs, yes?
Coyotes are native to North America. Aren’t any anywhere else, barring perhaps the odd zoo.
ETA: Maybe confusion with the Golden Jackal?
we just had a coyote culling in my area. It happened a couple of days after I personally heard what sounded like quite a few of them howling in the night.
I don’t remember ever hearing a coyote as a child but they appear to be growing in number rapidly.
Your analysis seems a bit suspect since there is no universal restriction on wolf hunting, and the photo doesn’t indicate in which jurisdiction it was taken. For all we know this could be a wolf hunt in the Republic of Khakassia.
Wrong.

“Bag limit, five wolves (up from two last year).”
Wolf hunting is completely, strictly illegal in some states.
Never mind. I see you meant there is no worldwide restriction on wolf hunting.
I had no idea that Idaho’s laws now applied to the rest of the planet. Do you have a cite for that as well?
In Ohio, coyote season is 365 days a year. There is no limit; you can kill as many as you want, with any rifle caliber of your choosing.
Those are some pretty healthy coyotes. The ones around here look a lot leaner.
Maybe it’s just their winter coats that make them look thicker - it looks like a cold environment.

Yep. You’re right it was jackals. Sure looked similar to a layman like me at least.
Good call.
