Is this REALLY a virus?

Every once in a while when surfing I come across a warning after clicking a link that says something like " warning virus alert do you want this to have access to your computer?"(This is not some coincidence with my outlook running in the background causing this…happens when I am purely surfing) Of course I say no but is it really a virus or something my virus protector thinks is a virus? Is it possible to put a virus right on a web site like that? I use AVG virus protection so maybe it just happens with them for all I know. I am however more than a little curious about this because if this is something dangerous I’d like to know BEFORE some bozo comes up with something I am not protected against.

Can you give more information, like the exact message you saw?

Sorry not right now but if I come across this message again I will copy it and post it here. This by the way has happened 4 times so far and my AVG has been stopping it from contaminating my computer or possible causing this message in the first place. One of the things I’d like to know is whether this is real or a bug caused by AVG.

Yes some virsus spread through webpages. Several months ago, I got the same warning with NAV from a site I was browsing but it was too late. I had a website that I was running, the files stored on my own computer. While this virus stored it self in my website directory so that any time someone pulled up that page, they got the virus. I think it is Nimbda, the virus was stored on my computer as readme.eml.

There are too many websites that are infected and so many people don’t even know it and continue to spread viruses.

Odil

Do you remember just the name of the virus that was reported?

It is possible to contract ActiveX based viruses when surfing, but you’d be safe if you don’t use IE. Java applets can’t modify files on your computer.
