Both threads’ titles invite negative comments.
Except those threads were basically “Olive Garden, yea or nay” in which case “Nay” is a valid answer. If someone started a thread asking “Olive Garden fans, what do you think of their fall soup selection?” Then those posts would have been threadshitting.
I also thought that Mod action went too far. The post in question was a direct answer to the OP question. I was going to start a thread about it but now I don’t have to.
It was not threadshitting. It was only answering the OP. Just IMHO.
What about, “Olive Garden soups: am I the only one who doesn’t like them?”
I wasn’t puzzled by the mod note at all. I didn’t read that thread, and I’m not going to.
What’s a “cell phone”?
Never been to Olive Garden. Never will.

Actually, a better analogy would be: “Olive Garden soups cause outbreak of Salmonella. Am I the only one not surprised at all by this”?
I love the clam chowder. This is OK.
I have eaten there a few times and I hate the soup. OK
I have never been to an Olive Garden and I never will. Threadshit.
Why would a faux Italian restaurant have clam chowder?
:flees:
ETA: Cioppino
You’ll have to ask someone who has actually been to Olive Garden. ![]()
Jeez, y’all. Some people are just chatty. This is a message board on the internet, not the senate floor. Can we just be welcoming? There are tons of posters who are annoying jerks; someone posting a lot is pretty minor.
I guess I instigated this, and I apologize.
I thought it was threadshitting. Why come into a thread only to announce that you don’t know or care what the topic is about?
Anyway, it was only a mod note, and I received one too for junior modding.
Ah well, live and learn.
The thing is, I really do care about the subject. I have spent many hours discussing this with my family and friends. I think Facebook is intrusive, I always have. Now I feel vindicated. They truly are giving untoward groups access to peoples lives. It is not right. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I have nothing to hide but I still don’t want some third party analyzing my data. It has proved harmful, look to the Whitehouse and you will see it in action. Sad situation.
As for my posting amount, I think its my right to post as much or little as I like. There is no rule against it. And, I don’t think all my posts are useless, granted they are not manna from heaven, but still. Now that I understand what threadshitting is, I will endeavour to not do it again.
I don’t see it as threadshitting either; to me, threadshitting is saying something like “This is a a stupid topic and you’re all stupid for discussing it.” Beckdawrek was simply answering the OP’s question. So what if she doesn’t use Facebook? I don’t use FB either; does that mean I’m not allowed to have an opinion about the Cambridge Analytica scandal?
I don’t get the animosity toward Beckdawrek. Well, actually, I do; it’s the Dope’s reflexive hostility toward newcomers—particularly newcomers who post a lot. There seems to be an attitude here that you should lurk for a year or two to learn about the “board culture” (whatever that means) and then gradually phase yourself in, starting with one or two anodyne posts a week. Beckdawrek didn’t do that.
I could name a couple of posters who constantly drop drive-by, one-line turds into threads, and nobody notices or cares because those posters been around for a long time.
It is so funny to me to be considered chatty. In RL I am considered quiet to he point of being uncommunicative and rude. I have spent my life trying to justify my quietness. Lucky for the dope I have found a voice ;).
That data was stolen, not handed over by or bought from facebook. If you drove your friends car and someone took the keys from your purse while you were at work, it wouldn’t be fair for them to say “Beckdawrek gave my car keys to someone and they stole my car”. Maybe you could have kept them more secure, but you didn’t hand them over.
There’s a few youtube videos that do a good job of explaining it. One with the guy that did the programming, explaining exactly what happened and how and two, that go together, with someone secretly filming several meetings with them under the guise that he’s going to hire them.
Facebook may do some sneaky stuff, they might do things that make you want to avoid them, but in this case, they didn’t just hand the data over.
Bullshit. There might be a few who think that way but most people would think that that’s ridiculous. There’s a large gray area between making a two year study before uttering a word and twenty plus posts per day every damn day. Almost no one does that, particularly if it’s off topic or making very uninformed WAGs in threads looking for opinions with people with actual knowledge and experience on the topic.
Quantity vs quality. Choose carefully.
It’s exactly the same thing. I don’t do Facebook because I don’t want to. If you don’t want to read my post, just don’t do it. I have learned what threadshitting is and I will try not to do it anymore. That’s all I can do.
You’re wrong and you don’t know what a right is.
No one ever made the claim that there was. Just because you can doesn’t mean that you should.
And you don’t have to read anyone else’s posts. Often it seems like you don’t. Look, you are annoying a significant number of people. You don’t have to care but that’s a fact. On the other hand, I doubt that anyone wants you to leave forever. You can do with that what you want.
