I did read the previous posts. I did not see what I believe to be the answer.
The answer (IMHO) was originally that films you might see where people were buck naked and screwing, except for their socks and their watch, were made in environments where people were not encouraged to take their time and may well have had doubts about the security of their effects. A feature of cheap porn flicks in the early years of such, and still possibly present in new material for the same reasons, it may well have become by now a schtick that is included on purpose.
I know that I, personally, value my socks over my pants anytime in a situation where I might be raided. Steal a man’s wallet, pants, shoes and even his underwear… but only a real sick co-worker steals another man’s socks!
Dead Flowers: Frequently, guys put a sweat sock over their dick when they masturbate. Makes clean up much easier, although a momentary memory lapse in the morning might lead to a serious ick factor.
This has evidently been around for quite some time; i.e. socks being worn in porn.
My mother told me of a time back in the mid to late forties where she and a group of other guys and dolls had gotten together at a friend’s house to watch a “blue” movie. They were pretty hard to come by back then, and only the relatively wealthier folks had them. She said curiosity was killing her and even though she knew she’d probably keel over with embarrassment, she just had to see it.
Anyway, she said they all just sort of sat around, and the women especially were a little uncomfortable (remember, we’re talking pre-Eisenhower days here, kids) when she suddenly blurted out, “WHY ARE ALL THE MEN WEARING THOSE STUPID BLACK SOCKS???”
Of course, hilarity ensued and even the menfolk thought it was quite funny. In nearly every scene of that movie, the male actors ALL wore black socks.
I mentioned to her (many, many years later) that I had seen several porn movies (I have no idea how in the hell the topic was even brought up) and the first thing she asked was, “Do they STILL wear the damn black socks?”
That’s when she told me the story. I wonder if it’s some kind of inside joke for the porn industry, because I have seen dozens of older and newer flicks where they wear the obligatory socks.
Couldn’t be less sexy, IMO. And thanks to her, I can no longer watch a skinflick without hunting out the sock wearers!
Maybe it’s so the foot-fetishists don’t get any free jollies and have to buy whole separate tapes of just naked feet?
(I personally think feet are gross, and prefer the socks…but I’d be lying if I said I was looking at the feet. Ahem. I second the comment about the faces, though…yuk for most of them.)
I haven’t noticed the sock thing in film, but then again I don’t watch all that many porno films. I have, however, see about a bazillion pictures that have lasses wearing socks. While odd, I eventually chalked it up to the ladies having ugly feet or something. Only thing that made sense at the time.
