Is this T Shirt that offensive

One of my friends in high school had an irrational hatred for cops. He ended up getting shot and killed by them. Although we miss him, we still laugh at him for being so stupid.

The shirt isn’t really super offensive, I just think it would be really embarassing to meet a really cool cop while wearing it.

I get the political point and all, and it’s kind of cool, but I think you’d be really foolish to wear it in public, it’s like begging for them to mess you up. And not ALL cops are pigs. You might as well wear a big sign that says “Hit Me!”

A t-shirt that’s disparaging and snide about someone with an extremely difficult an dangerous job? What could possibly be offensive about that?

My reaction to someone wearing that shirt is that they are an incredibly immature dufus. And I would likely sprain something with all the eyerolling I’d do. YMMV.

Do people really still call cops “Pigs”?

Aww, I was expecting shirts with a giant picture of LBJ.

One of my friends has been a cop for many years, and he, and many other fellow cops collect pig stuff. Like, you know, how some people collect penguin figurines or cats? Well, these guys collect anything Pig. Anything.

My sister made him a ceramic pig, really mean-looking pig, with mean red glowy eyes. He loved it. LOVED it. He showed it to the guys at work and they envied him terribly and all wanted one like it. (But my sister didn’t feel like making mean pig sculptures for everyone!)

With all that said, I think the reason that these guys like pigs is because they choose to collect them, and it’s all within their circle of fellow officers. I suspect, based on my friend’s attitude, that he’d not take such a t-shirt kindly (if it wasn’t worn by a cop, anyway) and besides, it’s pretty lame anyway.

I like the cops and I like the shirt :smack:

Yes, unfortunately. My sister said she can’t go anywhere without some immature 15 year old oinking at her. Very sad. :frowning: Someday those kids will need the police…then I guess they will have a more mature attitude towards the men and women who risk their lives everyday for people who oink at them.

I have an unfortunate, irrational prejudice about police, stemming from an incident in my childhood. I would not wear the shirt in question. Only a cop could wear one safely. Anyone else would be mistaken for a subhuman in need of a sincere whoopin’. Now, of course, if you are an entity in need of a sincere whoopin’, feel free to wear the shirt.

What do you like about the shirt?
Although, regardless of whatever reason you have for liking the shirt, people who see you wearing it will simply assume that are a “punk kid” who thinks making fun of cops is cool. Provided you’d rather not have people make such an grossly inaccurate characterization, you might want to rethink your fashion choices.

Not offended by the shirt, though it is certainly provocative.

One thing that strikes me in this thread (tangent warning)…lots of folks seem to be saying “don’t let a cop see that” or “better hope the cop’s in a good mood” or “you’re going to bet beat up”, etc.

Cops are human, of course, but it’s unsettling to think that your life may depend on the mood a cop is in or whether they like your shirt or whatever.

We are rightfully proud of our Constitution and our legal system, but at the enforcement level, it comes down to the human factor, then all bets are off. :frowning:

It’s just a t-shirt. The people that would actually be offended by this, are people I probably don’t want to know anyway. If I was wearing it, I would have no qualms about asking a police officer for help. Although, I guess I figure that it would be foolish to judge someone’s actual feelings on a matter based on their t-shirt. I have a Fuck School t-shirt which I like, but it certainly doesn’t mean that I hate school/teachers/students/etc. It’s meant tongue in cheek (seeing as I do believe that education is very important, and study at college). I would probably assume the same kind of situation if I saw someone wearing the Pig t-shirt. (Unless they were also wearing anarchy symbols, and going for the whole Punk look…)

Why deliberately make an effort to offend anyone? Especially someone who carries a club, a gun, a can of mace, a pair of handcuffs, and has the authority to arrest or ticket you? Whose sworn duty is to protect you from bad guys and who is expected to risk his/her life to save yours?

If you must offend someone, pick someone who deserves it. Put John Ashcroft’s name on that shirt and wear it proudly.

Rather you than me.

OK, so given that it’s provocative and can be interpreted as insulting, ask yourself if you’d be embarassed to ask a cop for directions while wearing that shirt.

If you can honestly say “no” to that question, buy it.

Low Key, If I see a whorish woman on the street, should I assume she’s a whore, or should I assume she’s subtly commenting on the poor state of female-male relations in today’s sex driven society?

This is the kind of Thread where I really like to check the “Location” listing for each poster. It really surprises me how many people are posting such emotional responses to this T-shirt.

I’ve only ever lived in major cities (currently in Los Angeles). In a major city, no one would even notice this T-shirt. It wouldn’t even elicit a raise of an eyebrow.

I’m glad I don’t live in a place where you have to accept getting beaten up if someone doesn’t like your T-shirt.
For the record: I don’t find it offensive but as a political/social statement it’s just kinda flaccid, as a joke it’s quite uninspired. There are much funnier anti-cop T-shirts.

I’ve always enjoyed the effect of the punked out surly rebel wearing the ironic pink-on-black I [heart] cops T-shirt. It’s obvious that the wearer does not like cops so an anti-cop statement is made through the incongruity. It’s funnier and more memorable.

If someone is wearing a sign expressing a viewpoint, it seems to me not unreasonable to believe that person subscribes to that viewpoint. I can’t speak to your Fuck School t-shirt, but there’s nothing in the OP’s linked t-shirt that suggests that it’s tongue-in-cheek. And why would you think that someone who actually believed you espoused a viewpoint you were visually proclaiming would be unworthy of your acquaintance? Do you only associate with telepaths?

I think most cops try hard to do an incredibly difficult job well. They’re often in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don’t situation, where they will either be accused of brutality or irresponsibility. I find the implications in this thread that someone would likely be beaten up (by cops) for wearing that shirt to be sadder than the shirt itself.

Oh, the shirt? I think it’s lame, old-hat, and rude to men and women who, on a daily basis for not very much money, go out there and do our dirty work. They deserve better.

That Fuck School t-shirt that Low Key wears would raise some questions:

How come you have to go to Fuck School? Everybody I know figured it out on their own.

Do your teachers at Fuck School make you do it over until you get it right?

I gotta admire your school spirit, though.

Hear Hear! some people here are over-analysing. It’s just a fucking t-shirt for pete’s sake!
