Is Trump confused?

I wasn’t clear enough…I made a mistake using the phrase ‘stage fright’.

In my post saying that Trump feels no stress, unlike a normal person who feels stage fright, I should have said:
“a normal person on stage feels a normal amount of stress, and therefor responsibility.” Because they care about how they present ideas, and want to be persuasive.

But for Trump–it is the opposite. When he is on stage, he feels no stress, because he genuinely does not care. He knows he is always right, and he knows that he always has the biggest crowd of supporters to applaud him. Look how he talked about the crowd at his inauguration–he honestly thought it was the biggest in history, and when the aerial photographs proved the opposite, he still insisted that his numbers are right, and the photos were wrong. He simply lives in a delusional world. It’s not due to aging, or dementia. He just doesn’t care; if he does debate Biden, he will be sure that he won, no matter what unforgivable drivel comes out of his mouth.
Compare that to Biden, who will make 2 simple mistakes that should be forgivable, but the media wont forgive or forget anything. They will replay those 2 bad sound bites so often that the swing voters will believe that Biden lost the debate, and decide to vote for Trump instead.

Though the thing is he does not just sound blatantly incoherent and confused next to a regular public speaker. 2024 Trump is incoherent compared to 2020 Trump or 2016 Trump.

He’s never been a particularly coherent public speaker (one of the irritating things about mainstream coverage of his speeches is how it would add the odd word here and there that he missed, to make him make sense) but that speech was completely incoherent. As you point out above to make it make sense you don’t need to fill in the odd missing word but whole passages.

Compare that to his infamous “Mexico aren’t sending their best” speech to see the difference.

And one of the characteristics of dementia is it’s degenerative, getting worse with time, just saying.

Granted completely. The guy is almost always fully incoherent word salad now.

My point was merely that the one snip @chappachula cited is not an example of word salad. It’s an example of his “endearing shorthand” as @Mijin almost put it.

None of which is meant to defend trump.

“I heard that Saudi Arabia and Russia will reebedouhh…”

“Did you just see Maduro Venezuero vene it’s unbelievable…”

“We call it migrant kime, I come, I came up with that name.”

“We will expel the wall mongers…”

“Any time I start talking, they type the red light off.”

“Biden can’t compay, he can’t speak…”

“We gotta swamp 'em. This is the opposite of the swamp we talked, this is positive swamping.”

The other ones I could more or less translate. But this one has me stumped…

Gift link to hilarious Wapo Alexandria Petri cognitive test for presidency:

Person, woman, man, camera, TV.

It’s literally a 5 second clip. Not only can you not get context from it, but you don’t even know what he said. He might have even corrected himself immediately afterwards.

No question he sounds like an imbecile in the clip, but you could probably make anyone sound bad with a clip that short. It doesn’t really demonstrate anything.

If it were only a 5-second clip in isolation, maybe.

When paired with multiple clips from the same speech and from other speeches in recent weeks, though, it’s apparent that he’s losing his grasp on the English language and is struggling to find basic words like “turn” and “war”.

“Redouble,” maybe?

Remember we’re only discussing a 5 second clip in isolation. Not sure what else you assumed. If you think I’m defending Trump’s competency in general that’s pretty funny.

I don’t hear that.

In most of those examples, he’s slurring his words. He doesn’t say “wall mongers”; he says “warmonger”. He doesn’t say “they type the red light off”; he says “they take the red light off.” And etc.

Now, that slurring might also serve as a sign of his cognitive decline. But I don’t think he’s failing to find the words.

"will be reducing their " (“orders?”)

So he did correct himself immediately afterward.

There are countless examples of Trump babbling incoherently (and anyone who wants him to be a leader should be concerned), but that particular example looks like a simple verbal slip. I’m sure everyone does that now and then.

You guys are giving Loser Donald a lot more credit than the New York Times gives Biden.

Anyway, here he is talking about what a great guy Argentina is.

Because when people take Biden’s slips out of context that ticks me off. Doing the same with Trump isn’t any better, that’s just tribalism.

The difference is that you don’t have to use trickery to make Trump look like a lunatic, he does a fine job on his own.

Yep. That particular one is a nothingburger. Or nothingberder. I hate Trump with the passion of a thousand suns, but that sort of out-of-context clipping is horseshit.

I am so going to steal that.

Putin is “throwing around the nuclear word” because he has no respect for (checks notes) current president Barack Obama.

“Diiiiing boom! This is me, I, I here. Bing!”
