Maybe Trump should use the Ozzy song to intro his rallys…
Oh no, sir! Please don’t throw me into a system where everybody gets health care! (But will there still be a taco truck on every corner?)
For trump, every day is Festivus, The Airing of the Grievances.
Thing is, none of his so-called “press conferences” are press conferences. They’re televised speech rallies where no one else gets to talk but him until he eventually allows a few questions at the end. Fortunately, his obvious confusion is coming through loud and clear. Hopefully no one tells him.
I’ve read some people saying that they think Trump is in “I alone can fix it” mode right now - he’s convinced that his campaign is floundering because of these eggheads telling him to stick to the prompter and read from his notes and use these props, so it’s up to him to show them how it’s supposed to be done.
It makes sense to me.
Well, he is Fruit Loops…
Right, and he has never given an interview, either. But the NYT loves the guy.
He’s good for their circulation. Or at least was, before it became obvious that they were anti-Biden.
And the questions are incredibly softball.
I can’t remember which channel I saw it on, but there was a great comparison of the combative, probing questions* asked of the current white house press secretary, versus the simple lay-ups and banal questions being asked of Trump at these events. Plus they take non-answers as answers, no follow-up.
I don’t know though the degree to which this is orchestrated, versus just being baked in to how the press behaves. I think they’re all used to Democrats being the adults in the room, that you should bring your hardest questions to, and Republicans being easily-triggered and not very knowledgeable on anything.
* And, to be clear, the combative style is absolutely what the press should be doing: speaking truth to power and holding public servants accountable.
Within reason of course: bringing insults, or inserting a false premise in the question is not good faith “combative”. And there has been quite a few times where Jean-Pierre accurately answered a question, but was still asked it several more times by the RW journalists, presumably just trying to provoke her.
Product placement. Trump is really showing how he can denigrate the presidency.
The British media seems to do a great job of this, in contrast.
Yes. I live in Britain, and while some media standards have dropped a bit, it’s still the case you’d need to be brave and well-prepared to take open questions from the press.
“What happened to Biden? I was running against Biden, now all of a sudden, I am running against somebody else? It’s true. It’s interesting. I said, who am I running against? They said Harris. I said, who the hell is Harris?”
“She’s prohibited from laughing. They say your laugh is horrible. Never laugh ever. So she’s walking around with her mouth like almost sealed shut. I want her to laugh. And then we will just claim victory”
“They will say he’s rambling. I don’t ramble. I’m a really smart guy”
“A tariff is a tax on a foreign country. A lot of people like to say it’s a tax on us. No… It’s is a tax that doesn’t affect our country”
“Joe Biden hates her, ok? Hates her. You don’t mind if I go off teleprompter for a second, do you? Joe Biden hates her. This was an overthrow of a precedent. I spent a hundred million dollars fighting Biden”
“Did you ever hear of Barack Hussein Obama? Have you heard of him? There are those that think he is currently running the country.”
““I use the term, often time in closing, ‘We are a nation in decline. We are a failed nation.’ And I think it’s a beautiful phrase.””
Forgetting what state he’s in
When is he ever on teleprompter?
Honestly, these clips are like a comedy show.
“I love the playback controls you have nowadays. They used to call it TiVo, now they TiVo— I think it’s the single greatest invention. it is better than television”
“I am much better looking than her. I’m a better looking person than Kamala”
“Time Magazine doesn’t have a picture of her. They have this unbelievable artist drawing her. I said is that Sophia Loren? Is that Elizabeth Taylor? They took a lot of pictures, it did not work out. So they hired a sketch artist.”
Elizabeth Taylor and TiVo. I think one of the questions he should get at the debate is “What year is this?”
“This is a dead seat. It is a seat voted with this group of people, Barack Hussein Obama and Biden, and her. Because she was a part of it”
“This is the Maduro plan, Venezuela, Maduro plan of, like, the old Soviet Union.”
“Your global warming is war. Your global warming is gonna be nuclear weapons, they talk about an ocean that’s rising which will give you slightly more beachfront property if it happens.”
“But Bordet Czar Harris are coming in from the worst places”
“So guys are walking into stores – they walk into stores with a calculator, keep it under $950 and is going to happen. If it goes to $9,050, nothing happens either.”
I don’t play the clips, but what strikes me in all these posts are the faces of his audience. They all look bored and sort of at a loss to understand what’s expected of them in the face of his endless blather. So often they’re looking away, looking at their phones, not really doing anything except maybe looking for the exits.
Cowboy Hat guy can’t seem to take his eyes off his phone.
I guess the penny never drops that they’re just being used as props.
Clear projection. I think in this thread it was pointed at that Trump never laughs unless it’s in a mocking or belittling way, because he thinks normal laughter is making you vulnerable and is a sign of weakness. So he assumes Kamala is undergoing whatever Trump’s dad did to him, that maybe his handlers are stopping her.
(On the contrary, she and Walz are still openly joyful and presenting positivity as they campaign and make other public appearances.)
Honestly it’s almost kind of sad, this guy is about to become an octogenarian and yet he’s still traumatized by child abuse. As much as I despise Donald Trump, I still am furious about what his dad did to him.
