But as an aside, who else does he think is “stealing” this phrase? Has any Democrat called the US a nation in decline lately?
This one actually surprises me. It’s so fundamentally wrong. Either this Wharton grad really has dementia, or he knows that at least 50% of Americans are so stupid, they’ll still think someone can say this and still be perceived as “better at handling the nation’s economy” than their opponent. (Astoundingly, even quite a few Democratic-leaning voters think Trump – and/or Republicans in general – is better at economic issues!).
Elliott Kalan* made a spot-on observation regarding Donald’s rants. He said Trump was a terrific comic monologist in the grand tradition of Professor Irwin Corey.

To be fair to Donald Trump – obviously, the highest and best use of my time – the eerie, unnatural glow off of his face, reflecting back on the screen he was using, could tend to render the red color extremely difficult to see, leaving essentially white text on a white background.
I don’t think it’s either of these. He’s been pounding this drum for years now, so it’s not a product of his recent decline. I think he just really is that ignorant. Whatever he may have “learned” in college never stuck. If he didn’t really believe this, why would he be so hell-bent on slapping tarrifs on everything?
If he knew what tarrifs actually were, he wouldn’t have used them, to the detriment of his precious economy.
While I do think his weird backwards fixation on tariffs is simply a result of his progressing dementia, if he’s been at this for a long time it makes me think something else could be at play here. Maybe Trump has found some way to pocket some percentage of tariffs for himself. I am not sure how he would accomplish this or if tariffs are even vulnerable to such shenanigans but knowing how Trump treats other people’s money in general, I think it would certainly be worth looking. After all, it doesn’t have to be that he is either insane or he is a thief. It could be both at the same time.
Or tariff rhymes with Sheriff and poor Trump just wants secretly to be a cowboy.
But that would require US tax authorities to be in his pocket. I’m sure he would love that, but I can’t see that actually happening. ‘Don’t fuck with the money’ is a pretty fundamental rule for tax collectors. And who else would kick back to him?
Now, maybe he used this to get kick backs from other people. “Nice international trade you’ve got there, it’d be a shame if a tarrif got slapped on it…”
They are not at his rallies to listen to what he has to say. He has pounded his words into their heads every single day on Truth Social. They are there to wallow in the shit with their fellow assholes and cheer when they hear the trigger words. They try to get a photo of their hero to brag about and then leave early to beat traffic.
I’d compare it to going to a live football match.
You’re not there to watch the game, find out the result or learn more about football, you’re there to enjoy the atmosphere, to cheer, hoot and holler.
You’re there to enjoy the atmosphere and the rush of of being part of a crowd -
It many ways it’s not dissimilar to the two minute hate or “kill the pig”, and is about as rational
The more I watch Trump, the more I have to wonder if he is preparing to use a diminished capacity defense at his multiple trials after he loses the election.
His ego would never allow that.
