I recently saw an article about this (can’t find it now). Some town in the south told the Trump campaign they need the money up front or no rally. Put in a big deposit, in cash, or no go.
The part I do not get is if you or I tried a tiny fraction of what he did we’d have our credit rating smashed and no one ever would give us a loan or do business with us yet Trump kept managing to get people to do this. Pretty much every time they got screwed working with Trump there were always some others lining up to do the same.
My guess is that they’re allowing him to act on credit so they have bragging rights that they hope to capitalize on.
It’s kind of like the guy who finds and buys a scalped Super Bowl ticket. It costs $3000, and it’s way the hell back in the nosebleeds, but he can brag to everybody he knows that he went to the Super Bowl. That’s gotta be worth something, status-wise, among his fellow football fans, right?
Somewhat similar is the group or whatever that operates an arena or stadium, and is willing to rent the venue to Trump, on the understanding that he’ll pay later. They’ll get stiffed, and likely they know that, but hey—they can say that their venue hosted a Trump rally! That’s gotta be worth something, right?
To you (generic “you”) and me, no. But to them, they could make a lot off the fact that “our venue is where the former President spoke, and the next President spoke.” That will appeal to Trumpists, who might want to rent the venue for a sports tourney, or a convention of some sort, or some other large gathering. And unlike Trump, they are willing and able to pay. A trump rally can be a loss leader, in other words.
In other words, if Trump stiffs the venue owners, they hope to make it back, and a lot more, through bragging rights: “Donald Trump Spoke Here.”
Sure, except for the fact that anyone who knows about Trump knows he doesn’t pay the people or venues he hires (hos do his lawyers get paid?) so everyone looks at you as a fool and an easy mark in future business dealings. I wonder how those payments to E Jean Carroll and New York State are going.
Most of trump’s career as a stiffing business dude was pre-internet.
We now take for granted that everyone on Earth knows he doesn’t pay his bills. In 1970s Atlantic City or wherever that fact was much less widely available. Various contractors who are all competitors don’t talk to each other much.
Hell, if I just did a job for trump and eventually figured out after enough trumply excuse making I got stiffed but good, the last person / business I’d want to tell is my arch rival down the street. I’d much rather he get burnt at least as badly as I did. Business is not us against them; it’s me against everyone: customer, vendor, and competitor alike. But especially competitor.
The world is a big place and there are plenty of suppliers who have to learn for themselves by touching the hot stove.
I don’t think Trump is giving up; he wants a shield against his legal issues and the adulation of his followers and quitting won’t do that. And it would mean admitting he lost which he absolutely hates; the latter reason by itself is enough for him to stick it out to the end so he can claim again that the election was stolen rather than him losing.
In fact I think the latter issue is one reason he seems to have trouble switching targets from Biden to Harris. Trump really wanted to beat Biden to avenge his 2020 loss, and Biden stepping out of the race means Trump can never, ever do that. And I think he’s having trouble dealing with it.
I wish some news org would file a FOIA request with the White House to see if the previous first family paid for their groceries like other presidents’ families did. Traditionally the White House buys the groceries and after separating out any that were used for official business, hands the bill to the First Lady. You know that Donnie told Melania- “Don’t pay, what they gonna do, kick us out?”
DJT famously stiffed the caterer for his latest wedding, telling him “I’m doing you a favor by giving you this event, and when I do a favor, I don’t pay”. Not an exact quote but that’s the gist. If I was Kamala, I’d look that caterer up and invite him to the debate. Then announce during the debate: “I just want the world to know that I personally paid the catering bill for my opponent’s latest wedding because I believe the nobody should cheat a person trying to make a living, especially those that want Americans to entrust them with the presidency.”
If we’re going to invite all the people that Trump didn’t pay, I’d also like a separate – and equally large – section for all the women who’ve credibly accused him of sexual assault.
He brought a few of Bill Clinton’s accusers out to rile up Hillary…
Maybe… In my imagination (and I am trying to be clear that it’s just my imagination) but I can see Trump having a wedding that looks lavish but is extremely cheap, so the actual bill might not be massive.
