Is using a train whistle on a car illegal in CA?

The most frequent answer I’ve gotten so far is “I hope not”.

Vague and subjective as usual.

Agreed, but most folks (most importantly, cops and traffic court judges) who have heard a train horn would agree that in the context of automobile traffic, it is loud and harsh.

Train horn on a pickup truck.

Ferry horn on a pickup truck.

The first one is just a bunch of jackasses that deserve to be ticketed and maybe even arrested, and the second one - if you need to use hearing protection, there’s no question that it’s too loud. Not harsh though - nice and smooth.

Really cute, But I’m not sure I’d trust my little girls hearing to that protection. She is having a ball though.

Why does this remind me of Bubb Rubb and Lil’ Sis: - YouTube

I remember those well, but they have “gone away”.

“Gone away” as in “made illegal”?

There’s a google ad at the bottom that reads: “Super Loud Auto & Truck Horns Kits Starting at Only $x”.

I guess that it’s illegal to own/install a fog horn in your car, but legal to sell.

I suspect the real reason is more embarrassing to the owners than made illegal.

I now know what I want for my birthday!!!1

That would be, what, #17?

Don’t I wish.

I used to fantasize about putting a train horn on my car. Back then, I was driving an '87 Chevy Nova (the one that was a re-badged Toyota). One of that car’s many, many problems was a wimpy little horn that nobody ever noticed.
