Is "Winter Wonderland" winking subtly at premarital sex?

That’s what happens when you don’t set your limit at 15 schnitzengruben.

You mean the Russian weather prognosticator?

Rudolph the Red knows rain, dear.

If one is sufficiently clever, one can find prurient undertones in AC/DCs “Mistress for Christmas.”

I have not heard this song, but I would be shocked–shocked!–to find prurient undertones in an AC/DC song. I mean, sure: some people say “Let Me Put My Love Into You” is suggestive (sample lyrics: “Let me put my love into you, babe/Let me cut your cake with my knife”), but to those of us without dirty minds it is just a sweet offer to cut and serve a birthday or wedding cake.

I never realized before how romantic this song was.

swoon

Eurythmics’ version of the song has a couple of introductory verses I haven’t heard in any other recording. I don’t know if they were specifically written for the recording.

*Over the ground lies a mantle of white
A heaven of diamonds shines out through the night
Two hearts a-thrilling
In spite of the chill in the weather

Love knows no season, love knows no clime
Romance can blossom any old time
Here in the open
We’re walking and hopin’ together*

Then Annie segues into “Sleigh bells ring, are you listening?”

Interesting!

These are in the original song. Most Tin Pan Alley songs of that era had introductory verses that were often dropped in recordings. Doris Day sang the intro in this recording from 1964.

Huh! Were they generally dropped because recordings had to be so short?

Anyway, so much for the idea that it was written about young kids. Teenagers, maybe.

I’m sure that length had something to do with it. Most 10-inch 78s held three minutes of music or less.

Another reason is that a lot of intros were meant to be sung at a languid, conversational pace. This wouldn’t fit well on a dance band recording, because dancers usually want a constant tempo. Sometimes they would squeeze an instrumental version of the verse into the recording somewhere, without a vocal and without changing tempo.

Maybe not but is it bestiality?

You know, sometimes a snowman is just a snowman.
