Is your oven/stove gas or electric?

Poll coming. I’ve never seen a hybrid but I left options for it in the poll. If you’d like, indicate where you live.

Me both gas (thank God) and Chicago.

Gas/gas, though electric oven/gas stove is kind of ideal if you’re into a lot of baking.

Electric. I generally prefer gas.

In the household where I grew up (well from 8th grade to 12th at any rate) there was an electric stove with oven PLUS a gas oven separate from that so that my parents had two ovens to cook in.

I’ve wanted that ever since and I want two ranges as well. That would be so nice.

(My parents also had two refrigerators and an almost ridiculous array of chest freezers… I think it finally came up to FIVE of them, chock-full of frozen sides-of-beef and last-falls-frozen-beans-from-the-garden and leftovers and several homemade ice creams and pork shoulders and several whole chickens and a deer or two and all kinds of other stuff… I don’t crave five freezers but I wish I had ONE at least)

Electric oven/gas hob, which I think is the ideal combination - gas hob gives greater control, electric oven makes for a more even bake.

I get the impression that combo is pretty common here (UK), though I know a lot of people with variations on electric hobs. I don’t think gas ovens are that popular, though all combos are certainly available.

With the move to sustainable energy, putting gas into new buildings is becoming less common. In fact from 2025, it’s being banned from new build homes entirely.

Electric/electric, Wyoming. It is how the house was set up when I bought it.

Would prefer gas by a long shot.

Electric oven/gas stove. It’s the standard configuration here - electric ranges are used (although they’re usually integrated into the counter top), but I’ve never seen a gas-powered oven. I’m not even sure they’re legal.

Israel.

I chose electric oven and cooktop. This is because it is what my apartment has. We are buying a house, and it also has electric both, so that is what we will have.

If choosing, I would choose gas and my wife would choose electric.

I think if you want to know what people would prefer you need a different question. Many people, if not the majority, have what their apartment or house came with rather than what they might choose if buying new. This poll will give an idea of what is currently in use, but not people’s actual preference.

All electric house, Texas.

I actually wanted it that way, due to a fear of gas and possible leaks. All the houses near me are electric only.

There is an older section of the neighborhood about a mile away which has gas available. Imagine my delight on discovering the main supply line for that area runs through my yard. Seriously. It runs beneath the street right up to my driveway, does a 90 degree turn and runs the length of my lot (and beyond). I discovered this when the road was dug up to repair it.

Good thing I avoided gas near my house, right?

All electric - Belgium

Induction cooktops are the best.

All gas, it’s the only way I’d want it. I remember once having an electric stove in a rental, and I hated it.

But many people have updated their kitchen at some point in their lives (I’ve done it several times), and if your property has access to both gas and electric, then you certainly do make the choice. Buying a new kitchen often seems like a national past time in the UK. It seems like the first job many people undertake when they move house.

(It was the first thing I did when I bought a house in Italy. I think the locals thought I was mad, given that the place already had a working kitchen. I just didn’t like it).

Although many people do just go with what they’ve always used.

My parents have an electric hob (stove) and I LOATHE it. So hard to control the heat. My Mum likes it because it’s easy to wipe clean.

They’re cool, but you have to buy new pots.

Other: Electric/electric in one home, gas/gas in the other. The gas is also convection. I vastly prefer the gas, however I have noted these advantages of electric. Stovetop is easier to keep clean. Oven heat stays more inside the oven with electric as it’s better sealed, gas need air flow for combustion which heats up the kitchen. I would assume that an electric oven might actually be cheaper to run due the reduces heat dumped into the kitchen from the exhaust a gas oven must have.

Gas - Bucharest, Romania. Electric stoves are highly unpopular where I live.

For that reason, electric ovens are also much more sensible in warm climates.

All gas, wouldn’t have it any other way.

There’s a reason all restaurants use gas for cooking. If you’ve used gas you know it’s instantly responsive, heat drops the second you turn it lower. And it’s really challenging to cook with electric if you’re used to gas.

Actually grew up with all electric, but I’d never go back.

True, but for me an electric kitchen would almost certainly be a deal breaker. I have a very strong preference for gas.

By “buying a new kitchen” , I’m assuming you mean something similar to what I would call “renovating” the kitchen - new cabinets, counters, appliances, floor , maybe changing the tile on the walls from reverse, possibly moving appliances and therefore changing the locations of gas and water connections and electric outlet. Yeah, if I’m doing all of that, I’ll get whichever I prefer, gas or electric. But more common in my experience is replacing a single malfunctioning or outdated appliance - and if I’m only buying a stove, chances are good that I don’t want to pay a plumber to run a line for gas so I can change from an electric stove to a gas one.

Correct. Buying a new kitchen is changing the whole shebang. Ok, you might retain some appliances if they’re in good condition, but in my experience, buying a new kitchen frequently includes changing appliances, particularly as kitchen companies often offer an incentive to do so.

I’m struggling to think of a time I’ve ever bought a cooker without it being part of a kitchen renovation. I feel like they don’t break down beyond repair the way dishwashers and washing machines seem to.

Gas cooktop separate from electric double wall oven. Best of both worlds!
