Breaking news.
I hope he is happy at the right hand of Xenu.
In all seriousness - whatever his beliefs were - the Shaft song might be the most badass theme song in the history of the universe. This is sad news.
I was in the middle of starting a thread - here’s a link. I hope people remember him as a guy who made some really excellent music, especially for, um, gettin’ down, not for the South Park stuff. The theme from Shaft is awesome and really the best part of the movie in my opinion. The only one of his albums I have is Hot Buttered Soul, which is really cool.
Perhaps there’s a layer of sarcasm I’m missing here, but as Xenu is/was* the ultimate bad guy in the Scientology mythos, I doubt that’s where Hayes would want to be.
*Publicly, some leading Scientologists seem to have made conflicting statements about the significance of Xenu.
Are you sure he’s dead, dude? Did he crap his pants?
Why? I think it is more disrespectful to eliminate bits and pieces of a person rather than accept them as a whole person.
I for one will remember him for South Park.
First Bernie Mac, now Isaac Hayes. Sad weekend.
I fucked that up. I thought Xenu was the god of Scientology. I guess I don’t know much about it to begin with. Anyway, whoever is the god of Scientology, I hope Hayes is with him.
Heehee - I just saw that episode for the first time yesterday…
I can’t dig it.
What a shame.
Hayes was one baaaaaaaad muthfucka. I became a fan of his when he won the Oscar for the theme from “Shaft.” And yes, I really enjoyed him as Chef in “South Park,” too. “Chef Aid” is one of my all time favorite albums.
Here, chillun, I wrote a little song to explain it to you all.
*I’m gonna make love to you, woman
Gonna lay you down by the fire…
And caress your womanly body
Make you moan and perspire…
I’m gonna get those juices flowing
Making Love Gravy, Love Gravy, Love Gravy
Love, Love, Love! Ooh-ee…
Open up a packet of my gravy…
Baby it’s burning just for you…
Would you like another helpin’ of my gravy?
Baby say yeah… [yeah yeah yeah]

No more “Chocolate Salty Balls”
He was one of the great songwriters of the 20th Century. “Hold On I’m Comin’”, “Soul Man”, “I Cant’ Stand Up For Falling Down”, “You Don’t Know Like I Know”, “You Got Me Hummin’”, “Your Good Thing (Is About to Come to an End)”.
Very sad day in Memphis. Black Moses no longer walks among us.
“Goodbye, Children.”
“Bye, Chef.”
Shut yo’ mouth!
But I’m talkin’ about Hayes!
It’s off to Comedy Central for me to watch some of the best Chef episodes of South Park. Chef Aid, Succubus, Chef Goes 'Nanners…
I guess he finally made it to Phoenix.
Growing up right outside Memphis, Hayes and his music was an integral part. The Fresh Prince totally idolized him, repeatedly referencing him, including the cool tribute in the aborted marriage episode with Hayes himself appearing.
What a sad weekend. R.I.P. Isaac and Bernie
Holy crap. I sure hope not. How is Morgan Freeman doing? He might be the next in this trifecta.
He was in a serious car accident last week but is out of the hospital now. He & his wife are getting a divorce, however.
It’s certainly been a very bad month for African-American entertainers.
