Islamic Dopers, is this a mistake?

So I’m reading this article that mentions Scorsese’s movie “The Last Temptation of Christ” and I guess during the last supper you can hear the Islamic call to prayer. The article never mentions this as something strange. What gives? Is this some sort of mistake, artistic liscense, or did the Islamic call to prayer evolve from some earlier traditions?

thanks

Sounds fishy as the prophet Muhammad wasn’t born until 570AD.

The Islamic call to prayer was instituted by the Prophet Muhammad circa 522. So to have it in the time of Christ is definitely an anachronism. Although from the Islamic point of view, Jesus was one of the prophets of Islam, so in spirit it isn’t far off, just in the details of practice.

My guess as to how it got into the movie is thanks to the soundtrack by Peter Gabriel. It has been released on CD as Passion - Sources and includes tracks by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and other musicians from the Middle East, South Asia, and northeast Africa. Peter Gabriel assembled this eclectic bunch of sounds for reasons best known to him. Perhaps to evoke a Middle Eastern mood while being inclusive of the common background of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

And a damned fine soundtrack it is, too, I might add.

Sorry for thetypo . . . the year I meant was 622.

I dunno why there is so much talk of Islam being there before Muhammad. They say the Quran was written before muhammad and stuff. This is a silly idea since all the stuff in the Quran relates to the happenings of the muslims in that time and it was revealed over a long period. The reason why people think so is that it is the only religious book that revives christianity and judaism and says that jesus christ was a cool guy and so was moses.Well that gives people the excuse to make allegations that are not backed up by fact and just try to exploit western ignorance about our beliefs.I do love that soundtrack.Nusrat Fateh Ali(RIP) had a great voice. As for the prayer call, well it all started when praying in mosques began and they were thinking of how to announce prayers e.g church bells etc. they thought about a large drum which was the pagan way of praying to the gods, well then the prophet announced that there would be a prayer call and it would be so and so.Thats the story. The prayer call distinguished islamic prayers from the idol worship congregations at that time.
It also told people to close their shops and come for prayer since radios and TV’s weren’t invented.
