Israel, and the USA as of June 21, 2025, strikes dozens of targets in Iran, including nuclear program

Israeli news reports 17 injured, 1 moderate 16 light

They’ve given the order that it’s safe to leave the shelters. Looks like no third wave after all? They reminded people to stay near shelter in case more launches occur.

Just spent an hour in my building’s bomb shelter. Heard some explosions at the beginning, but I don’t know if they were impacts or intercepts - the authorities are being cagy about where the missiles hit. We’re all fine.

Super glad you are ok! Must be scary.

Being trapped in a room with my neighbors, who all wanted to socialize with me? Fucking terrifying.

If having missiles/bombs thrown at you is a good social time then have fun.

Glad you’re okay @Alessan.

Iran is claiming to have shot down two Israeli F35s. Who knows if it’s true.

Attack on Tel Aviv:

Does not appear so.

The IDF denies it as well.

Agree. That’s nightmarish!

Second only to getting hit, of course.

Tellingly, all the footage has been either from previous and unrelated crashes or more commonly video games. But also, during the time the IAF was sortieing earlier today (when the shootdown rumors started), the Iranian Air Defense Force* was not even capable of preventing reconnaissance drones from loitering over Tabriz, so the odds they took out more than one fifth-generation fighter are… low.

Oddly Iran-aligned social media seems to have decided early on that the pilot had been captured and was definitely a woman. I’m not sure why that specific detail was important but it’s stuck with the rumors ever since.

* A separate branch of the armed service. Presently Iranian air defenses are engaged against resumed IAF airstrikes, including over Tehran

Because Iran just tested an implosion device and has enriched uranium to a point where they can quickly enrich it to weapons grade. They were given an ultimatum and negotiations failed.

Their pre-planning for this was extensive. They’ve taken out top military leaders, top nuclear scientists, the locations refining the uranium, the actual uranium, military sites that make drones and missiles, oil refineries financing the military …

They’re not done. Iran is going to take a massive military and political hit on this.

It’s a common trope in the narrative presented about the conflict between Israel and its neighbors. Israel’s use of women soldiers in combat roles is viewed with a mixture of derision and disdain as well as fear (of being defeated by a woman) by Israel’s neighbors.

The idea that the defeated and captured fighter pilot was a woman plays into that. And so does the idea that now this woman is in Iranian captivity.

Thankfully, the story appears to be complete horseshit.

Lol. Glad to hear you are okay

Hey, in my neighborhood it’s been quiet , so we were able to sleep for a full 2 hours!
Sirens are currently blaring for a third wave of incoming missiles.

This time, the cat is really pissed at me.
So , along with a flashlight, bottled water, chocolate-chip cookies, toilet paper and a (thankfully unused!) bucket, our shelter room is now stocked with cat treats.

Best wishes to the Dopers in Israel and anywhere else under attack.

Current update on casualties:
1 dead, 63 wounded in Tel Aviv.

In the small handful of missiles that got through have been strikes that hit residential apartment buildings directly. A ballistic missile can take out a building like that entirely, in one strike. Thankfully, there are shelters in this buildings for precisely this scenario, which is why the casualties remain relatively low.

Meanwhile, I hear rumors that Iran has struck the American embassy in Baghdad. If this is true, that seems beyond stupid.

It’s like they’re asking to be glassed.

Another 2 hours of uninterrupted sleep! Yay!
This time, there are two waves of missiles incoming, a few minutes apart.
That makes six launches so far tonight, and tbe sun doesnt rise for another hour.

My cat is enjoying her treats.
The rest of us, not so much.

Thanks for the context. That makes “sense,” for some value of sense, I guess.

This appears, thankfully, to have been untrue.

Less thankfully, the news is currently reporting 3 Israelis killed from the series of barrages overnight, one in Tel Aviv (as noted) and two from an impact in a residential area in Rishon LeZion, southwest of Tel Aviv. Additional injuries, some critical. Hopefully “nothing more than” lost sleep for you all here.

Israeli airstrikes have broadened to include other Iranian targets, more focused at neutralizing Iran’s ability to retaliate, including the airbases at Mehrabad (Tehran), Hamadan, and Tabriz (Twitter link, Hebrew). These are/were home to a significant portion of Iran’s F-4 (at Hamadan) and Su-24 (at Mehrabad) fighter-bombers*, as well as a number of F-14 and MiG-29 fighter/interceptor aircraft, although IRIAF presence appears to have been fairly desultory.

* Kermanshah, another Su-24/Su-25 base, was also hit yesterday but apparently the missile facilities and not the airbase itself
