Issues with new install of XP

Ok, I have a home network using a Linksys router. I had 2 PCs on it both running win2k. I upgraded one of the PCs to XP Pro. Everything went fine exept for the network connection. There is none. On boot up, I get a good IP address (192.168.1.102) a good subnet mask (255.255.255.0) and a good default gateway (192.168.1.1). There is no valid connection to the router though. I can ping 127.1.1.1 from it and thats it. I can’t ping the router and I can’t ping the other PC. I CAN ping from the win2k box TO the XP box and get a good ping. I can even access files on the XP box from my computer. I just can’t do anything from the XP box. If I ipconfig /renew from the XP box, I get the “no DHCP server found” message and then it comes back with the “bad” IP address of 169.XXX.XXX.XXX. It seems that everytime third time I do anything like this, I have network issues, but I can never remember what the hell I did to fix them. Any suggetions at all?

Nevermind. It was ZoneAlarm. It wasnt “running” so I never even thought about it. I turned it on and none(few?) of the settings had been retained during the upgrade to XP. This has happened before. I love ZA but it can be a pain in the ass when it’s doing its job. Sorry to waste all the computer junkies time. Mods you may close this if you see fit.

Its all good, its fun to see how third party programs screw up Windows sometimes. Also a reminder of what to keep an eye out for in tech support.

Side note, if you’re running ZA, you may want to make sure Windows didn’t turn on it’s own firewall. This is togglable from going to the properties of the network connection in question and consulting the “Advanced” tab.
