I saw a Wrangler Jeans ad recently which featured the Credence Clearwater Revival song Fortunate Son. They played these lyrics:
…and stopped right there.
A decade ago, it was controversial for Nike to use The Beatles’ Revolution Number 9 in an ad. But instead of outrage this time, I think we’d be lucky to get cynical grumbling. Game over, hippies. Game over.
Lots of “protest” songs from the 60’s (well, even non-protest) haven’t aged very well especially in their original context- or maybe I’ve just heard them way too many times. They do seem to lend themselves very well to be taken in a new, modern patriotic context. The hippies were right, but for the wrong reasons, if that makes any sense.
I’m sure it doesn’t go over well with them, but there it is. Either that, or I’m just really twisted. Oh Well.
Shows better than ever just how apolitical the business world is. They’ll license “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” from the Dead Kennedys if it’ll sell blue jeans.
a lot of songs are ending up like that. hell, I saw a pringles commercial the other day with “jump around” from house of pain. my jaw just dropped on that one.
