It must be pledge time...

…the Three Tenors are singing “White Christmas.”

SHIT! Now it’s “Let it Snow!” It doesn’t even fucking snow where these guys are from! Why do opera singers insist on ruining already-bad pop songs? And throw in a Big Operetic Finish?

I have come to loath PBS’s pledge periods. They trot out the same Big Specials every time, then ask, “Where else but PBS can you get programming like this?” Thankfully, nowhere but PBS, and THERE only during pledge time.

The local station, WTTW, has been running this doo-wop special into the ground for the past year, broadcasting it several times a week. They don’t even bother making new pledge breaks! No, they show the one they recorded Sunday all week!

They are also fond of throwing a bone to the old folks with Perry Como and Lawrence Welk “specials.” Good God, I’m thankful they don’t show THAT shit the rest of the year, but it is so patronizing!

Speaking of patronizing, how about the “salute to your ethnic group” evenings? These are so self-congratulatory to make a guy sick. Especially if he ISN’T Greek or Jewish or whatever the flavor of the day is.

Using pre-recorded pledge breaks means they cannot give progress reports, but they stopped having publicly-announced goals years ago. Not like WBEZ, our main NPR station. It tries to make pledge times fun, tries to minimize them, has clearcut goals, and ends the drive when the goal is reached. WTTW has had pledge periods that lasted THREE WHOLE WEEKS, with no indication when it will end except when the TV Guide starts listing all of the good shows that were suspended for the duration.

So, can you guess which, TV or radio, I give MY money to?
