It’s hard to get a job these days. I never been to prison and don’t have a record. But it’s getting harder to find a job these days in 2024. I was born in 1993 so I’m 31 years old. I was in special Ed during grades 4 to 8 because I scored 55 to 70 in the iq test back then as kid and then went to a normal high school and graduated four years taking summer school twice. My first job was at 10 years old shoveling snow manually in my neighbourhood for one house which then went to two houses once I turned 18 and graduated from high school. After that from 18 to 27 I worked at warehouses and retail stores stocking products. At first they tried to put me as a cashier in retail but I wasn’t good at counting change and have trouble at 31 counting change. Then Covid 19 happened and my mental health got worse. I went to college at 20 and graduated at 24 for two year business administration associates degree because I dropped three courses one of them twice since I had anxiety that I would fail and get low gpa so I took summer class and passed all three with 3.46 gpa. I had anxiety since I was 14 and depression since I was 28. Also I have homicidal thoughts which is symptoms of my depression alone with suicidal thoughts which I don’t act on it because it’s illegal to act on homicidal thoughts and I don’t have the balls to commit suicide . So i went to therapy and told my therapist and made a video that I had homicidal thoughts but I don’t act on it because it’s illegal. So I ended up on the psych ward three times once for two days and other for two weeks. I have job gaps due to anxiety and depression. Longest is just 16 months and shortest three weeks. I currently work as sign holder making $18 an hour those people you see in America holding advertisement sign since I was 26 to 27 starting at $14 an hour back then which I started off with two temporary sign holder jobs for two different companies and I’ve gotten emails saying I have done wonderful job with the sign holder position. In my current sign holder which I worked for the company since 2021 the owner and managers are saying I’m doing a great job and invited me to a Christmas party last year at a bar and restraunt. I get end of the month visits at my home by the therapist accompanied by a cop. I also worked as a mascot making $20 an hour with no benefits since I was 29 and I have to pass a background check in mascot job which I always pass since I don’t have crimes against children or vulunerable people and somehow me getting end of the month therapist visits accompanied by a cop at my home don’t show up on the background check since I didn’t go to prison or jail for that. I never tell people at work my mental health issues and I don’t put the pronoun crap in my resume. I’m willing to do any job I’m qualified for even wiping people’s butts at home or McDonald’s. I applied to McDonald’s many times as an extra source of income online and in person but didn’t get hired or called back. I been applying to warehouse jobs, factory jobs and construction jobs online but didn’t get a call back or interview. The only interview I got online was a car wash job which the interview went good but I didn’t get a call back and the door to door sales which the interview went good but didn’t get a call back. I’m blessed and grateful to be working my sign holder job but I don’t get enough hours and it’s only part time not every day. I’m blessed and grateful to be working as mascot but I only work in the summers and it’s part time. I still work as a snow shoveler making $1000 per season for two houses in my neighborhood which is the only job that I get paid in cash. I want to try new better job opportunity now that I’m in my 30s and feel a little bit confident compared to when I was in my 20s.
Try Walmart.
You’re being proactive. That’s huge. You worked hard to get your degree, that also says a lot about you.
You can communicate, and express your feelings.
All of these things are pluses in your favor.
You don’t say what state you’re in, but there should be a state agency that can help you find additional work, and/or training for work. In Massachusetts they call the agency Mass Rehab (MRC, Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission); I’m not what it’s called in other places. If you search for “vocational rehabilitation” in your state you might find it. You can also ask your therapist to help you find who to contact.
Thanks I appreciate it. I will walk into my local Walmart which I have I think like five or six Walmarts in my city. I will apply online and hand in my resume in person too.
I’m originally born in Michigan but came to Canada as a kid at 12 with my parents. So I will definitely look into the Canadian version of vocational rehabilitation.
Thanks. Lot of jobs judge based on appearance and attractiveness like if they are attractive they prefer them over average people. Also then there are hypocritical conservatives who are against immigration and illegal immigration’s but hire illegal immigrants for jobs in their homes vacuuming floors, farms, factories and warehouse so they can pay them less than minimum wage which is illegal.
Im, you may want to ask, when you find a vocational resource center, if you can get funded to speak with a job developer. Job developers are usually good at partnering with persons looking for jobs that are good for a career.
Ok I will ask. Thanks.
Try using paragraphs. I hope your resume doesn’t look like that.
OP was open and upfront about the significant mental health challenges he faces, maybe you should get off his ass about paragraphs.
My thoughts are offered as constructive criticism. As a prospective employer, I would want to read something more easily comprehensible.
This is the internet not a college assignment or job resume. My resume looks decent. Also there are lot of illegal immigrants who don’t have resume and they get hired easily. Even EX cons and felons get jobs easily and recruited out of prison by skilled trade jobs like electrician, construction worker, plumber, gas fitter, pipefitter, welder and arborist. Gyms are recruiting ex cons for jobs as personal trainer once their sentence is done like The Fitcon Jordan Hoelscher.
I hope Im returns as the job search goes along with an update. We’re open to that for sure!
Oh dear. I can go on and on about Walmart and how they hire less employable people.
How they work with the community and do a lot of hiring of people of age and some mental disabilities. They hire young, new to the job market workers. With basic training, added. For competitive pay. They have a deli for folks who like food-service.
There are jobs that don’t face the public. There are door greeters and stockers. There’s the auto dept. who needs people who are less than skilled in mechanical trades to do menial labor.
They hire people at holiday times. They could become so valuable as to be offered full-time work after.
They are not the best employers, by all means. They do offer jobs.
Is that enough paragraphs?
I’ve never ever had a resume. I have a portfolio. Thanks.
Since my post was quoted I thought you meant for me to use more paragraphs.
As usual I think everything is about me. Sorry.
Good job hunting luck, Im.
Keep us posted.
WalMart here in Montana is offering $22USD/hour for overnight stockers. Put on a podcast or 5 and earn decent money. Target is offering the same. Housing prices are tough, but it seems like the big boxes are stepping it up a bit.
That’s cool that Walmart in Montana pays $22 an hour over time.
In Ontario Canada Walmart pays between $16. 55 to $25 an hour depending on the job position.
Most jobs in Walmart in Ontario Canada are part time.
Another one if you are physically fit is construction labor–you’ll earn decent money, learn a lot. But, it’s tough on the body. Walmart and Target are straight time I think, just swing shift.
I did apply to construction jobs online in indeed but didn’t get a call back.
