To clarify, the FBI announced that they know who the thieves are. Not just that 23 years of crack investigative research indicates that a bunch of art was stolen by… people who steal art.
Yeah. that’s just a bad article. The FBI in their news conference said they know the names of the thieves but that releasing the names will hinder the investigation. The statute of limitations has lapsed and a promise of anonymity is probably the price the FBI is paying for their assistance in locating the stolen art.

I was just at the Gardner museum this weekend - my daughter is doing a project on Isabella Stewart Gardner and the museum. It would be the epitome of awesome if they recovered the paintings before she presents her project.
There was an article in the Boston Globe a few weeks ago about the robbery, and the fact that the guard who let the thieves in is still a suspect/person of interest. Maybe he finally worked out an immunity deal or reward in exchange for the names.
