Anybody know if the Italian Ubrella Pine (pinus pineace) can survive at Boston (lat. 42 degrees N)? I can’t seem to find these trees around here-can anyone recommend a good mail order nursery?
Do you mean Pinus pinea? If so, I’m seeing that it is only hardy to about Zone 8b or so, so the answer is no. No pesto for you.
There is a Japanese Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) that is most assuredly hardy in this zone.
Give global warming a chance.
WCRB-FM plays Resphigi’s “Pines of Rome” a lot. I think those are the only Roman pines you’re going to find in Boston.
Email this [EMAIL=jfzoppo@gis.net]guy. His name is Jim Zoppo and he has a gardening Q+A show in Boston. He answers these sorts of questions regularly and even owns his own nursery. If he can’t give you an answer and provide where you may be able to pick one up then I don’t know who can.

What, the bumbershoot it loves is far away in London?
Pinus densiflora does well, but I don’t know a lot about trees.
