my girlfriend has itchy skin most all the time. enough that it has caused her to bleed sometimes. This is not related to any disease, it is just general itching. The itch is located all over her torso, and she scratches constantly. Is there any hope? Is there someone out there who can give me some sort of home remedy to try out? i will try anything because not only is it driving her mad, it is driving me mad seeing her suffering so. Thanks in advance!!
I think they are called ‘anti-inflamatory’ In the UK there is a product called pyretin or pyretise or something - On the box it says it’s mainly for hay-fever but I have found it works brilliantly on plain old itching.
Ask your chemist/shop assistant for ‘anti-inflamatory’ or just ‘something to stop my girlfriend from itching’. They will probably know about the version of pyretise in your country.
You say it’s not related to a disease, but if it’s chronic itching, I don’t see how you can be so sure. Actually it sounds more like a allergy than a disease, but you never know.
I guess the first question to ask is when exactly did it start? Maybe she started using a different laundry detergent? That would explain something chronic, and primarily on her torso.
If that’s the case, the solution is simple enough; just stop using the new detergent (or whatever else you think might be causing a reaction…). But if the itch still persists, I would definitely recommend seeing a dermatologist.
I could be wrong about ‘anti-inflamatory’. Try ‘anti-histamine’ (more specific types of symptoms - ‘urticaria’ or ‘hives’, also called ‘nettlerash’)
Could also be exema, psoriasis, allergy, dry skin, etc. There are many topical ointments such as Benedryl cream that are anti-histamines that can help. There are anti-fungal ointments that work as well.
If it’s in a large area, I would recommend she go to her family doc for a look-see and a 'script for something to help her not bleed to death.
Just to add, it could be any number of diseases, including eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis. And on second thought, if you really want to go out on a limb, it might be psychological as well. Certain disorders can cause people to scratch nonstop, even when there’s really nothing itching, in much the same way that other people might incessantly grind their teeth or bite their fingernails when nervous. I don’t know the name off the top of my head, but I’ll try and find it and report back.
I suffer with this kind of thing periodically. Best bet is to get her to a doctor. Even if they can’t work out what it is, they can give useful treatments. When my itching was really bad (and I was bleeding, not sleeping, etc) my doctor gave me a milky lotion that I had to cover myself in and wear overnight - available on prescription only. It worked like a charm though and the relief was tremendous!
FYI - stress can cause this sort of itching as well. Back in the day, I scratched myself bloody behind my knees and in my elbows. It was my body’s way of telling me to chill out.
Yes, I should have mentioned that was (and still is sometimes) the cause of mine. The lotion still did the trick though. I guess the stress causes some kind of eczema and can be relieved medically (although sorting out the root cause is probably the best bet).
