Were you an adult in the 30’s and 40’s? Some of these breed specific hysterics go back that far, and probably further. These days, we hear so much about pits because information gets around much faster, and the media has given up just reporting the news.
Except when it isn’t.
I’ve had to do it three times. Do I get a prize?
Back when I was a groomer the worst dogs to get in were Cockers, because they were the current breed du jour and so bred in the thousands by puppy millers, with poor temperaments and worse health. And poor coat textures, meaning they matted easier and faster, leading the owner to not groom them, leading the coats to really be a mess by the time they were brought in to the groomer. So the combination of dog not used to being grooming, craptastic temperaments and matted to the skin coats meant we’d get bit a lot if we didn’t have a muzzle on the dogs.
Was there a public outcry to ban Cockers? Were dogs that did bite mis-identified as Cockers? No, because for the most part, a Cocker can’t kill or even main a human. The media isn’t interested in a dog bite story unless there is gore, as in “if it bleeds, it leads”. And people seem to be more tolerant of small dogs that bite, I suppose because of that “they can’t kill you” thing, so someone getting bit by a Cocker just isn’t newsworthy.
I spent the weekend at a UKC show and trial and the place was covered in Pits. Not even a curled lip. Wanting to ban Pits is just another example of punishing everyone for the action of a few.
These threads are always the same. All the statistics say pit bulls are dangerous. So the defenders come out with the “do not look at the man behind the curtain” BS about how the statistics are all wrong and it’s not the dog it’s the owner and they are totally lovable and misunderstood yada yada.
The same people would believe statistics if it suited them.
My answer is this:
do you think I give a rat’s ass if its an actual pit bull or a dog that could be mistaken for one? I don’t give a flying proverbial if every breed of dog that can be mistaken for a pit bull is neutered and dies out.
I don’t give a damn if it’s the owner or the dog. If pit bulls and dogs that can be mistaken for pit bulls can be mistreated such that it can attack and kill people, get the fuck rid of them.
yes they are lovable and etc. To you. Dogs are pack animals. The more they love you the more they fly off the handle at other people. “They were always so gentle and kind with my children, I had no idea they would kill the neighbour” is what every dog owner whose dog has been involved in killing or maiming someone. Will you ever learn? Nope.
Why just not admit that you hate dogs, and that you want to commit mass murder or an animal that has more to do with our current society than your sorry ass ever will be.
You would be digging grubs out of rotten trees if it wasn’t for dogs.
Hah! Been bit twice. First was by a toy poodle. Had the owner not been there…it would’ve been easy. Second was a 100lb Malamute. We didn’t like each other and got too close. THAT woulda been a fight, but he only got my hand before I retreated (there was a fence).
But for dogs of my own I prefer little ones. Forty to sixty lb max.
I hope this is a parody. Because it should disturb anyone that they are making the exact same arguments used by racists. “I don’t have anything to back me up, but it really is always this group I hate.”
I had actually assumed this was going to be a repeat of the thread where people complained about attacking dogs always being labeled as Pit Bulls.
Problem is that, either way, I think more poorly of Leaffan. Either he’s being stupid in the way racists are, or he’s trolling, pretending to believe something he doesn’t.
The fact that many insurance companies and municipalities specifically refuse to allow pit bulls, isn’t too bad for prima facie evidence that the breed has a behavioral problem, and I don’t feel the need to recreate all their research (heck, insurance companies knew that asbestos caused heath problems before it became common knowledge.) Unless it’s all a conspiracy and they’re in the pocket of Big Poodle (Little Poodle?)
That assumes that the restrictions have any basis in fact.
And not all insurance companies resort to breed bans
But why don’t you produce their extensive research that shows a scientific link…and when you are doing so remember that insurance rating, like racism, is simply a calculation on how to treat different people according to a set of traits shared among groups of people. The statisticians whom collect the data on breeds and injuries call out their limitations, but people ignore them and just cherry pick the numbers they want.
The fact that you claim that actuaries work on scientific fact really just demonstrates your ignorance of the industry.
WTF are you doing on a site that is intended to fight ignorance (BTW I prefer spitz like huskies but it is another breed that is on the “banned” list due to ignorance)
But I will give you credit for calling yourself out as blissfuly ignorant of the facts.
I remember when they were all "Uzi"s, not "AR-15"s.
I had one experience with a pit bull terrier. There’s one thing they never warn you about. If you’re wearing shorts, their wagging tails can nearly raise welts on your legs. They sure can leave some red marks for a couple of minutes.
In order to be able to get 3rd party insurance for my LLC, I had to get it from a UK company that will insure anything and anybody. None of the insurance companies in my country offers it for my type of company. There has never been any suits involving a company of such a type, therefore there is not enough information, therefore we’re uninsurable.
The logic behind what’s uninsurable doesn’t always make sense.
